A House committee moves forward with Mayorka’s articles of impeachment, setting up a historic floor vote.

Washington Alejandro Mayorkas, the secretary of defense, is the target of an article of impeachment that the House Homeland Security Committee voted to advance on Tuesday.

This could lead to a floor vote and the impeachment of Mayorkas, the first Cabinet secretary in almost 150 years.

Following an extended and occasionally heated meeting, the GOP-led committee voted along party lines, 18 to 15, to move two articles of impeachment to the House floor, where Republicans maintain a slim majority.

The articles of impeachment against President Biden’s top immigration official were made public by House Republicans on Sunday.

They charged the official with “breach of public trust” and “willful and systemic refusal to comply with the law” in relation to the administration’s handling of the migrant crisis at the border between the United States and Mexico.

The committee’s chairman, Republican Rep. Mark Green of Tennessee, stated that the group had “exhausted all other options” to hold Mayorkas responsible for breaking laws enacted by Congress.

“We cannot allow this man to remain in office any longer,” he stated. “The time for accountability is now.”

House Democrats called the impeachment attempt a “sham” and claimed that there was insufficient evidence of serious crimes or misdemeanors in the articles, which is required by the constitution for impeachment.

On January 30, 2024, the House Homeland Security Committee convenes to discuss articles pertaining to Alejandro Mayorkas’ impeachment as Homeland Security Secretary.

On January 30, 2024, the House Homeland Security Committee marked up articles of impeachment against Alejandro Mayorkas, the Secretary of Homeland Security.

The markup from Tuesday continued into early Wednesday.

Democrats made repeated requests for recorded votes and raised procedural objections in the morning in an attempt to postpone the meeting.

The top Democratic member of the committee, Rep. Bennie Thompson of Mississippi, stated, “Neither of the impeachment charges the committee will consider today are a high crime or misdemeanor.”

Mayorkas is accused of repeatedly breaking the law by permitting the release of migrants who are awaiting legal proceedings in the first article of impeachment.

According to the second article, Mayorkas obstructed congressional oversight of the department by lying to lawmakers about the security of the southern border.
