After fatal storms and frigid temperatures, more severe winter weather is on the way.

Before another severe cold front engulfs the central and eastern regions of the United States by the weekend, winter storms will make landfall on both coasts.

Since last week, when the coldest winter air and several storms brought snow and ice to much of the US, at least 55 people have died in ten states.

Oregon has been hit especially hard. Since Saturday, the state has seen back-to-back ice storms that have brought down power lines and trees; a third storm is currently affecting the region.

Since Friday, the storms and cold have claimed the lives of at least ten people in the Portland, Oregon, area.

On Wednesday, a tree branch in Portland caused the deaths of three people a live power line that hit their car and fell.

According to Portland fire officials, once they got out of their SUV, the live wire killed them.

According to Portland Fire, “the individuals became part of the active electrical circuit which resulted in their deaths when their feet touched the ground and their bodies were touching the car.”

An unharmed baby was pulled from the street by a kind stranger. According to Portland Fire, the Good Samaritan “grabbed the baby off one of the adults lying in the street for the safety of the child.”

The ice storm that caused the damage left the Northwest late on Wednesday, and the next storm arrived early on Thursday. On Thursday, freezing rain and heavy snowfall returned to the lower altitudes of Washington and Oregon across some of the Cascades.

As the freezing rain continues through Friday, ice will continue to accumulate throughout the severely affected Northwest. More ice could break power lines and weigh down tree limbs, increasing the likelihood that they will snap.

Due to the earlier storms, more than 45,000 residences and businesses in Washington and Oregon lost electricity on Thursday.

After a storm that breaks records, more snow falls.

On Friday, more snow is expected to fall over parts of the Midwest and East due to the collision of two pieces of atmospheric energy, one of which is linked to the deadly ice storm that hit the Northwest on Wednesday.

In Chicago, snowfall is expected to start on Thursday night, and by Friday morning, the accumulating snow will reach the central Appalachians and the interior Northeast.

The Mississippi Valley was the target of yet another round of shoddy wintry mix on Thursday morning. According to National Weather Service reports, travel in some areas of Arkansas and Mississippi was hazardous due to freezing rain.

Travel in some areas of the Tennessee Valley will be treacherous and dangerous late Thursday due to more freezing rain, which may mix with some snow at times.

Light to moderate snow is expected once more in the mid-Atlantic and Northeast, including Washington, DC, New York, and Philadelphia, cities that recently experienced record-breaking long snow droughts due to an early week storm.
