Due to issues with border management, the GOP-led House impeaches Homeland Security Secretary Mayorkas by a single vote.

After failing last week in a politically embarrassing setback, the Republican majority in the U.S.

House was determined to punish the Biden administration for its handling of the U.S.-Mexico border.

On Tuesday, the House passed a resolution to impeach Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas.

Speaker Mike Johnson’s fragile GOP majority was unable to handle many absentees or defectors during the evening roll call due to strong Democratic resistance to impeaching Mayorkas, the first Cabinet secretary to face charges in almost 150 years.

The House impeached Mayorkas 214–213, a historic setback.

Following his absence from Washington for cancer treatment, Majority Leader Steve Scalise has returned to support the GOP, and a storm in the Northeast is having an impact on Republicans recovered some others in spite of opposition from within their own party.

“Blautant act of unconstitutional partisanship that has targeted an honorable public servant in order to play petty political games,” was how President Joe Biden described it.

Next, the allegations against Mayorkas will go to trial in the Senate; however, neither Democratic nor even some Republican senators have expressed interest in the case, so it might be placed on indefinite hold and referred to a committee.

When the House reconvenes on February 26, the articles of impeachment are anticipated to be delivered to the Senate.

The case against Mayorkas has been referred to as a “sham impeachment” and a “new low for House Republicans” by Senate Majority Leader Charles Schumer, D-N.Y.

Amidst a chaotic scene of votes being counted on the House floor, the Republican attempt to impeach A sense of political desperation overtook Mayorkas over his handling of the southern border as Republicans find it difficult to follow through on their agenda items.

The Homeland Security Committee filed two articles of impeachment against Mayorkas, claiming that he had violated the public trust by lying to Congress about the border’s security and that he had “willfully and systematically” refused to enforce current immigration laws.

However, opponents of the impeachment attempt claimed that Mayorkas’s charges barely qualify as high crimes or misdemeanors under the Constitution, instead amounting to a disagreement over Biden’s border strategy.

Due to Biden’s son’s financial activities, the House had originally begun an impeachment investigation into him; however, after Georgia Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene, an ally of the late President Donald Trump, advanced the discussion after the panel’s exhaustive months-long probe.

After the meeting, Greene, who will manage Scalise’s impeachment in the event of a Senate trial, gave him a hug and posed for pictures with other lawmakers.

“The American people and how they feel, and then they need to read our articles of impeachment,” the senator stated.

Since Trump, the Republican front-runner for the presidency, has stated he will begin “the largest domestic deportation operation in American history” if he retakes the White House, border security has become one of the most important campaign issues.

Legislation to start deporting immigrants who were temporarily granted entry into the country under the Biden administration’s policies has been prepared by a number of House Republicans, many of whom are awaiting determination of asylum petitions.

Trump stated bluntly, “We have no choice,” during a rally over the weekend in South Carolina.

Johnson also turned down a bipartisan Senate border security package that Mayorkas had been working on for weeks. However, the speaker has failed to move the Republicans’ own plan forward, as it is unfeasible in the Senate.

“To give me, Secretary Mayorkas, and my administration the tools and resources needed to address the situation at the border, Congress needs to act,” Biden stated in a statement following the vote.

Three Republican congressmen, Ken Buck of Colorado, Mike Gallagher of Wisconsin, and Tom McClintock of California, who split last week over Mayorkas’ impeachment, did so once more on Tuesday.

Johnson had a 219–212 majority, but not much spare votes.

Later on Tuesday night, Democrat Thomas Suozzi of New York won a special election to fill the seat previously occupied by Republican George Santos prior to his expulsion from Congress, narrowing his margin of victory even further.

A number of prominent conservative academics and former secretaries of Homeland Security from both Democratic and Republican administrations have rejected the impeachment of Mayorkas as unnecessary or a waste of time.

Republicans “have succeeded in doing is degrading and tarnishing the constitutional meaning of impeachment,” according to Democratic Representative Jamie Raskin of Maryland.

“It sends a message that we’re not just going to sit by while the secretary of homeland security fails to do his job at keeping our homeland safe,” Scalise told reporters following the vote.

Mayorkas is not the The sole member of the Biden administration that House Republicans seek to impeach.

A lengthy list of people, including Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin, Attorney General Merrick Garland, FBI Director Christopher Wray, and Vice President Kamala Harris, have been the subject of legislation to impeach them.

A nearly 150-year-old House vote to remove President Ulysses S. Grant’s secretary of war, William Belknap, due to a kickback scheme in government contracts, marked the first impeachment of a sitting Cabinet secretary. Before the vote, he resigned.

Mayorkas, who refrained from testifying during the impeachment process, blamed Congress directly for the border crisis, stating that they neglected to update immigration laws in the face of widespread migration.

“There is no denying that the border is a problem and a crisis for us,” Mayorkas stated on NBC during the weekend. “And Congress must undoubtedly make the necessary fixes.”

Republicans like Johnson have resisted, claiming that the Biden administration could halt the number of crossings by taking executive action, just like Trump did.

However, some of those efforts have been questioned and overturned by the courts.

Mayorkas stated, “We always look into the options that are available to us and that are permitted by law.”

The impeachment vote that failed last week was an unexpected result on a high-profile issue.

It was an amazing show in a chamber that has been roiled by GOP chaos for months since the previous House speaker was removed.

Rep. Al Green, a Democrat from Texas, who had been admitted to the hospital for emergency stomach surgery, arrived unexpectedly, wheeled into the chamber in scrubs and socks, and voted against it, tying the vote and forcing its defeat.

“Undoubtedly, it feels good to be able to change things,” Green said, recounting his arduous journey from a hospital bed to the House floor.

“I just voted on the topics of the day using the best judgment at my disposal, as that is what I was elected to do.”

After serving as a Marine, Republican holdout Gallagher declared over the weekend that he would not run for office again in the fall, adding his name to the growing list of lawmakers who are leaving the party.
