Fani Willis Gave Unvarnished Testimony with Everything on the Line
The district attorney in charge of Donald J. Trump’s Georgia prosecution, Ms. Willis, vehemently denied claims that she had a conflict of interest that would have disqualified her from office.
Wearing a vibrant magenta dress, Fani T. Willis entered a Fulton County courtroom by herself on Thursday afternoon and declared herself prepared to testify.
She was interrupting her attorney, who was attempting to persuade the judge that she shouldn’t have to testify at all at that precise moment.
“I’m leaving,” Ms. Willis declared.
Thus, she acted.
Ms. Willis, the district attorney for Fulton County, Georgia, fought for almost three hours on Thursday while testifying in court to attempt to save her life’s work, the former president Donald J. Trump’s prosecution.
Ms. Willis, 52, gave a raw performance in which she portrayed a woman in all her facets. She alternated between being combative and serene, focused and discursive, and even declared that she preferred Grey Goose vodka to wine at one point.
Her words alternated between being informal (a thousand dollars was “a G”) and formal: she repeatedly began her remarks with some variation of “I want to be very clear.”

One of the defense attorneys questioning her, Ashleigh Merchant, was reprimanded by her for what she perceived to be court filings accusing Ms. Willis of having a conflict of interest that would disqualify her due to a romantic relationship with Nathan J. Wade, the special prosecutor on the case.
Case — were fabricated. Her tone became almost yelling at one point, so much so that the polite judge, Scott McAfee, decided to call a five-minute break to try to defuse the situation.
Fani Willis, the Georgia prosecutor, Gives Tense Testimony
In an aggressive manner, the district attorney for Fulton County, who is in charge of the state’s prosecution of Donald J. Trump, charged the defense with disseminating false information.
“Mr. Wade and you met at a conference in October 2019?”
“That’s accurate, and I believe you attempted to imply in one of your motions that I had slept with him during that conference. I find that to be really offensive.”
“We tried to obtain Delta records for any flights you may have taken when Mr. Wade,” your office objected.
“Well, no, no, no, Examine.
I’m against you obtaining records.
You’ve interfered with people’s private affairs. You don’t understand. You believe I’m being tried.
These defendants are on trial for allegedly attempting to rig an election in 2020.
No matter how hard you try to put me on trial, I’m not.
It’s intriguing that this money is the reason we are here.
As he once told me, Mr. Wade is accustomed to the idea that a woman’s only role in his life is to make him a sandwich.
We would get into heated debates over the fact that I am on par with you.
A man is not necessary for me. A man isn’t a blueprint. A man is a friend.
Consequently, there was constant conflict in our relationship, which is the reason I would refund his money.
My bills don’t need to be paid by anyone.
My father is the only man who has ever paid all of my bills.
“Mr. Wade pays you a visit at the location where you rest.”
“When?” “Has he ever paid you a visit where you slept?”
Let me tell you which one you lied in, just to be clear, since you have lied.
This very moment. Here, I believe you to have lied. No, no, no, no. That is the reality.
Furthermore, it is untrue. It’s untrue. “Mrs. Willis.” “Thank you, Mr. Sadow. It will take us five minutes.
Return in five.
Previously, Ms. Willis chastised Steven Sadow, the attorney for Mr. Trump, when he inquired as to In 2020, she had communicated with Mr. Wade.
“I’m not going to emasculate a Black man,” she declared, pointing out that Mr. Wade was suffering from cancer at the time.
She mentioned that for his 50th birthday, she would be taking Mr. Wade to Belize; earlier in the day, Ms. Merchant had questioned Mr. Wade regarding their visit to a tattoo parlor in Belize.

In a digression that the lawyers’ questions did not seem to provoke, she also said that she believed Mr. Wade to have a sexist worldview and that’s why they broke up last summer.
“Mr. Wade is accustomed to the idea that, well, as he once told me, all a woman can do for him is make sandwich for him,” she remarked. We would get into heated debates over the fact that I am on par with you. A man is a companion, not a plan, so I don’t need anything from him.
The courtroom in which Ms. Willis’s testimony unfolded was a strange mixture of titillation and fear as the criminal case against a former president had taken a strange turn and turned into a melodrama centered around inquiries about the personal lives of two prosecutors.
Ms. Willis maintains that these inquiries should never have been made public in the first place.
In the criminal election interference case she is leading against Mr. Trump and his allies, the seasoned prosecutor finds herself on the defensive.

Attorneys representing Mr. Trump and his co-defendants claim that she has an unconscionable conflict of interest because, following the start of their relationship, she hired Mr. Wade to handle the case and afterwards took opulent trips with him that he paid for, at least partially.
Asserting that Ms. Willis and Mr. Wade had been romantically involved, Ms. Merchant, an attorney for Michael Roman, a co-defendant of Mr. Trump who was once employed by his campaign, initially made this claim in a court document on January 8.
For almost a month, Ms. Willis and Mr. Wade refrained from directly answering the accusations; however, they eventually provided a response in their own court document.
The way Ms. Willis performed The response on Thursday was different, full of hurt, pride, and blustery words jousts.
It was the complete opposite of Jack Smith’s reserved strategy, the reticent special counsel handling the two federal criminal cases against.
Mr. Trump. Additionally, it was presented to the Fulton County voters who will decide whether to re-elect Judge McAfee later this year and who will serve as the jury in the case, in addition to Judge McAfee, who will decide whether or not to allow her to keep the case.
It’s possible that she was addressing a country that is beginning to question the legitimacy of her prosecution.
The Thursday hearing raised several unanswered questions, one of which is whether her efforts will be successful.
Earlier in the day, Robin Bryant, a former coworker and friend of Ms. Willis Yeartie testified via videoconference against her will, claiming that Ms. Willis and Mr. Wade had started dating prior to Ms. Willis hiring him in November 2021.

Mr. Wade stated that the romantic relationship started later, in 2022, but Ms. Yeartie’s testimony refuted his version of events.
However, Ms. Yeartie was unable to provide many specifics regarding her discussions with Ms. Willis, and it is uncertain if the judge will consider her testimony to be reliable.
When Mr. Wade went on the stand, he was questioned for a long time and at times angrily by Ms. Merchant, Mr. Sadow, and Craig Gillen, an experienced attorney who used to lead the Georgia Republican Party and represents one of the defendants.
Mr. Wade stayed calm near Ms. Willis.
Ran hot, giving thoughtful, impersonal answers to questions.
In her testimony, Ms. Willis recognized the distinction and referred to him as a “Southern gentleman.”
She added sardonically, “Me, not so much.”
Ms. Willis and Mr. Wade made every effort to refute the notion—which she finds absurd—that they were bringing legal action against a former president in order to obtain financial resources and lavish vacations.
According to Mr. Wade, Ms. Willis reimbursed him for “approximately” half of the trip expenses.
He added that she returned thousands of dollars in cash to him for tickets and other purchases.
The defense attorneys were skeptical of this and bombarded the two with inquiries concerning the procedure.
As Ms. Willis put it Her father, a retired lawyer and former Black Panther, taught her to always have a large amount of cash on hand and that doing so was a sensible way to show one’s independence.
Resuming on Friday at 9 a.m. is the hearing.
It is anticipated that Ms. Willis will advocate for further questioning.
Once more, the defense attorneys will probably swarm one side of the crowded courtroom.
All together, they resemble a vast array of boxy wool suits and white male faces, with the notable exception of Ms. Merchant, a white woman.
There could not be a more striking contrast than this with Ms. Willis, who is glowing magenta.
