US officials told CNN that a drone attack on a small US outpost in Jordan overnight resulted in the deaths of three US Army soldiers and the injuries of over thirty others.
This is the first time US troops have been killed by enemy fire in the Middle East since the start of the Gaza war.
President Joe Biden declared, “We shall respond,” on Sunday while giving a speech in South Carolina.
Three American lives lost at Tower 22 in Jordan, close to the Syrian border, represents a dramatic escalation of the already unstable Middle East situation.
According to officials, the drone appeared to be fired from Syria and was fired by militants with Iranian support. It continues to identifying the precise militia group that is at fault.

Three service members were slain and at least 34 injured in a one-way drone attack that “impacted at a base in northeast Jordan,” according to a statement released on Sunday by US Central Command.

Iran’s permanent mission to the UN was cited by state news agency IRNA as evidence of the country’s denial of any involvement in the attack on Sunday.
Tehran’s denial followed the announcement on Sunday that the Islamic Resistance in Iraq, a coalition of several militias supported by Iran in the nation, had attacked several locations along the border between Syria and Jordan, including the Al-Rukban camp.
The camp is near closeness to Tower 22, the US outpost.
The statement was uploaded to the Islamic Resistance’s Telegram channel prior to the US making the three service members’ deaths public.

Later on Sunday, during his speech at a South Carolina church, Biden asked for a moment of silence in remembrance of the service members.
“I want to emphasize that last night in the Middle East, we had a difficult day. At the end of his speech, Biden stated, “We lost three brave souls in an attack on one of our bases.”
More than 158 attacks against US and coalition forces in Iraq and Syria had occurred as of Friday; however, officials have deemed the ceaseless barrage of drones, rockets, and missiles as futile as they have been.

The drone appears to be the first known attack on Tower 22 since attacks on US and coalition forces started on October 17.

Sen. Lindsey Graham said in a statement on Sunday that the Biden administration’s “policy of deterrence against Iran has failed miserably” in the wake of the news of the three American deaths.
“The removal of all Iranian proxies by the Biden Administration will not stop Iranian aggression.
In addition to seeking retribution for the deaths of our soldiers, I am urging the Biden Administration to hit important targets inside Iran as a deterrent against further aggression,” Graham declared.
The top Republican on the Senate Armed Services Committee, Sen. Roger Wicker, demanded on Sunday that action be taken “directly against Iranian targets and its leadership.”
Additionally, Chairman of the House Armed Services “Long overdue is President Biden to finally hold the terrorist Iranian regime and their extremist proxies accountable,” according to Mike Rogers.
In an effort to defuse
US officials have stated time and time again that they do not want to see tensions escalate into a regional war amidst the escalating hostilities on several fronts in the region.
According to Deputy Pentagon Press Secretary Sabrina Singh, when asked last week if the Pentagon believed that Iranian proxies were intensifying their attacks on US forces, the answer was “Not necessarily, no.”
The Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Gen. CQ Brown, stated in a previously taped interview with ABC News that aired on Sunday morning that part of the US’s job is to “make sure as things have happened in the Middle East is not to see the scope of the dispute grow.
“We want to avoid going down a path of greater escalation that leads to a much broader conflict within the region, and our goal is to deter them,” he stated.
