Per the indictment, an FBI informant misled about Biden’s affiliations with Burisma.

The Justice Department announced on Thursday that special counsel David Weiss had charged an FBI confidential source with felonies related to false statement and obstruction for allegedly providing false information about President Biden and his son Hunter Biden.

The big picture: According to a DOJ statement, Alexander Smirnov, 43, was arrested at the Harry Reid International Airport in Las Vegas, Nevada, on Tuesday and was subsequently charged by a federal grand jury in the Central District of California.

According to an indictment that was unsealed on Thursday, prosecutors claim that Smirnov misled FBI agents in June 2020 about the fact that representatives of the Ukrainian energy company Burisma gave the Bidens $5 million apiece in 2015 or 2016.

The indictment against the defendant does not state Give the Bidens a name.

Zoom in: According to the indictment, Smirnov first reported “fabrications” about the Bidens in June 2020.

He was designated by the FBI as a “Confidential Human Source” in 2010.

“In truth and fact, the Defendant had contact with executives from Burisma in 2017, after the end of the Obama-Biden Administration and after the then-Ukrainian Prosecutor General had been fired in February 2016,” according to the indictment.

That is to say, when the Prosecutor General was no longer in office and when Public Official 1 [Joe Biden] had no power to affect U.S. policy,” it continues.

“To put it briefly, the Defendant turned his regular and unremarkable business dealings with Burisma in 2017 into accusations of bribery against Public Official 1, the presumed front-runner for president from one of the two major political parties, having previously shown prejudice against [Joe Biden] and his campaign.”

Notably, Smirnov allegedly claimed that representatives of Burisma informed him that they had hired businessman Hunter Biden, who is named in the indictment, because he would “protect us, through his dad, from all kinds of problems.”

The indictment claims that during his interview with FBI agents in September of last year, Smirnov “repeated some of his false claims, changed his story as to other of his claims, and promoted a new false narrative after he said he met with Russian officials.”

Context: Weiss was named special counsel by Attorney General Merrick Garland in August of last year to oversee the probe into Hunter Biden’s potential tax offenses.

Zoom out: Republicans in the House have cited unreliable details supplied by FBI informants as part of their as-yet-unproven claims of Biden’s bribery in their investigation into the president’s impeachment.

As part of that investigation, Hunter Biden is scheduled to give a deposition before the House Oversight and Judiciary Committees on February 28.
