Putin opponent Alexei Navalny passes away in custody Russia is blamed by the West

The most powerful opponent of Russian President Vladimir Putin at home, Alexei Navalny, passed away on Friday following a walk at the “Polar Wolf” Arctic prison colony, where he was serving a three-decade sentence, according to authorities.

With Putin getting ready for an election that will keep the former KGB spy in power until at least 2030, the disparate Russian opposition loses its most prominent leader with the passing of 47-year-old former lawyer Navalny.

Along with other Western leaders, U.S. President Joe Biden expressed his outrage and criticized Russia for Navalny’s death, attributing it to “something that Putin and his thugs did.”

More than ten years ago, Navalny became well-known for recording and speakingĀ in public about the extreme wealth and corruption he claimed the “crooks and thieves” in charge of Putin’s Russia were guilty of.

In Russia, Navalny is the only opposition leader of comparable caliber.

Putin has been Russia’s paramount leader longer than any other person since Josef Stalin, and for some young urban Russians, Navalny had provided hope for an alternative future.

In a statement, the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous District’s Federal Penitentiary Service stated that Navalny became ill following a walk at the IK-3 penal colony in Kharp, which is located roughly 1,900 kilometers (1,200 miles) northeast of Moscow.

It said that he almost instantly lost consciousness and passed away, and that attempts at resuscitation were unsuccessful.

Kira Yarmysh, Navalny’s spokeswoman, stated that there was “almost no hope” that he survived.

The spouse of Navalny, Yulia stated at the Munich Security Conference that “Putin and his government… lie incessantly,” making it impossible for her to be certain her husband had passed away.

“But if this is true, I want Putin, his entire entourage, Putinā€™s friends, his government to know that they will bear responsibility for what they did to our country, to my family, to my husband,” she continued.

Putin had been notified of Navalny’s passing, according to the Kremlin.

The 71-year-old ex-KGB spy was spotted interacting with employees at a Chelyabinsk, Russia, factory located in the Ural Mountains. Regarding Navalny, he remained silent in public.

Leaders in the West praised Navalny for his valor in defending freedom.

Some said Putin ought to be held responsible and accused the Kremlin of murder without providing any supporting evidence.

Russian spokesperson Dmitry According to Peskov, the response from Western leaders to the death was “absolutely rabid” and unacceptable.

“We don’t know exactly what happened, but there is no doubt that the death of Navalny was a consequence of something that Putin and his thugs did,” Biden told reporters at the White House.

“Russian authorities are going to tell their own story,” Biden stated. “But don’t misunderstand. Without a doubt, Putin is to blame for Navalny’s demise.”

Accusation of Murder

The majority of Navalny’s senior allies are currently living in exile in Europe as his movement is illegal.

Navalny’s chief of staff, Leonid Volkov, stated, “If this (the death news) is true, then it’s not ‘Navalny died,’ but ‘Putin killed Navalny’.”

The charge elicited no response from the Kremlin.

Yarmysh, the spokesperson for Navalny, declared that his goals and movement would endure.

“We are convinced that we will be victorious in the end,” she stated. “Russia is our country, it belongs to us and we need to return it us.”

Navalny’s attorney was en route to the strict correctional facility where the former was serving terms that would have kept him behind bars past the age of 70.

Russia’s opponents praised Navalny for willingly leaving Germany in 2021 to return to Russia after receiving treatment for what Western laboratory tests revealed to be an attempt to poison him with a nerve agent.

At the time, Navalny claimed that in August 2020, he was poisoned in Siberia.

The Kremlin stated there was no attempt to kill him and that there there is no proof that he was nerve agent poisoned.

Veteran liberal Grigory Yavlinsky expressed concern for the wellbeing of other activists incarcerated, echoing many opposition figures when he said that Navalny’s death demonstrated the need for reform.

Some laid roses and carnations at a memorial in Moscow, under the shadow of the former KGB headquarters, honoring the victims of Soviet political repression. Police observed.

The message on one note said, “Alexei Navalny – we remember you.”

Prosecutors in Russia issued a warning to the public not to attend any large gatherings in Moscow.

Meetings in London, Paris, Oslo, Rome, Brussels, Berlin, Geneva, Prague, Yerevan, Tbilisi, and Vilnius were organized by supporters to honor Navalny.

As a result of his claims that Putin had constructed a fragile, corruptible personal rule structure.

His charges regarding widespread corruption and Putin’s personal wealth were refuted by the Kremlin.

Russian officials painted Navalny as an extremist and CIA puppet, claiming the agency wants to create instability and make Russia a Western client state.

One day before he passed away, Navalny was laughing and joking about his running out of money and the judge’s salary as he looked through a barred window.

“Your Honour, I will send you my personal account number so that you can use your huge salary as a federal judge to ‘warm up’ my personal account, because I am running out of money,” he said through a video conference.

When anti-Putin protests erupted in December 2011, following , after an election tainted by fraud accusations, he was one of the first protest leaders arrested.

In an interview in Moscow in 2011, Navalny was asked by Reuters if he was afraid of challenging Putin’s system.

“That’s the difference between me and you: you are afraid and I am not afraid,” he said. “

I realize there is danger, but why should I be afraid?”
