Schumer hopeful that after Biden’s meeting, leaders will agree on border and Ukraine funding
Following their meeting with President Joe Biden on Wednesday at the White House, top congressional leaders expressed optimism that a deal on an additional aid package for national security could be reached.
The meeting was described as “productive” by both House Speaker Mike Johnson and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer.
After the hour and twenty-three-minute meeting, Schumer told reporters he was “more optimistic than ever before that we come to an agreement.”

Regarding the necessity of supporting Ukraine, he cited “Democratic and Republican agreement,” pointing out what he called “an understanding that if we don’t come to Ukraine’s aid, that the consequences for America around the globe would be absolutely devastating.
Nevertheless, some in the room demanded legislation to address the situation at the border before committing to further aid for Ukraine, the New York Democrat admitted.

Requests for questions from reporters gathered outside the White House West Wing were declined by Johnson and Schumer.
Johnson warned that “the devil is in the details” when he refused to commit to bringing a Senate-passed immigration bill to the House floor later on Wednesday. Johnson was speaking with CNN’s Kaitlan Collins.

In arguing for more aid for Ukraine, Biden stressed “the strategic consequences of inaction,” according to a readout from the White House.
The White House stated, “He was clear: Congress’s continued failure to act endangers the national security of the United States, the NATO Alliance, and the rest of the free world ” stated House.
According to earlier reports from White House sources, Biden’s warning would outline the possible military setbacks that Ukraine might experience in its ongoing conflict with Russia if it doesn’t receive more assistance from the US.

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell attacked Biden hours prior to the White House meeting for failing to label the surge of migrants at the southern border as a crisis.
“President Biden once again declined to characterize the circumstances at the southern border as a crisis over the weekend.
