Sheriff resigns after a deputy is accused of killing Sonya Massey

Sheriff Jack Campbell was asked to step down by Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker (D), who said that Campbell had “failed.”

Under pressure, an Illinois sheriff resigned after one of his deputies was accused of killing an unarmed Black woman in a case that sparked a nationwide outcry and caught the interest of Vice President Kamala Harris and President Joe Biden.

After Sonya Massey contacted 911 on July 6 to report a possible prowler, Deputy Sean Grayson was charged with first-degree murder.

In the weeks that followed, requests for Sangamon County Sheriff Jack Campbell’s resignation were made, but he refused to step down.

Even in his announcement on Friday, Campbell stated that he was only retiring in response to death threats against his subordinates, his family, and himself.

He released a statement saying, “It has become clear that the current political climate has made it nearly impossible for me to continue effectively in my role.”

“There are people who would prefer to see chaos and division in our community than to have me as Sheriff.”

By the end of the month, Campbell announced his retirement.

Following Massey’s passing, there have been demonstrations around the nation, and criticism of how law enforcement handles Black communities and individuals with mental health concerns has intensified.

Grayson, 30, is accused of official misconduct, aggravated battery with a firearm, and first-degree murder. He entered a not guilty plea.

Daniel Fultz, his lawyer, declined to comment.

Campbell has come under fire for bringing in Grayson, who began employment with the Sangamon County Sheriff’s Office in the previous year.

According to the county website, he had been found guilty twice of driving under the influence.

As a result of one of those convictions, he was dismissed from the U.S. Army for “serious misconduct.”

Despite this, Grayson’s employment was upheld by Campbell on the website, citing Grayson’s certification by the Illinois Law Enforcement Training and Standards Board and his passing a drug test, criminal background check, and psychiatric evaluation.

However, Campbell said he considered Grayson’s shifting between six law enforcement organizations in four years as a typical path for a young, ambitious officer looking to work at increasingly higher levels of authority, despite critics viewing Grayson’s movements as evidence of a disturbed cop switching between departments bigger organizations that would support his career development.

On the county website, Campbell stated, “No other law enforcement agency reported problems with Grayson before we hired him.”

However, documents disclosed by several of Grayson’s prior employers last week revealed that he had previously been reported at least a few times for making snap decisions and filing false reports.

Two incidents that Grayson recorded in his disciplinary file at the Logan County Sheriff’s Office were that of an erroneous report and a report that was contested by a woman he had arrested.

After working for the agency for around seven months, Grayson received a call from the chief deputy, who informed him that prosecutors might question his reliability.

On your honesty, the conversation’s recording states.

Grayson was fired by Campbell on July 17, the day he was charged, on the grounds that his conduct “did not reflect the values and training of the Sangamon County Sheriff’s Office or law enforcement as a whole.”

In spite of his apology and request for pardon, he was nevertheless called upon to step down by detractors.

At a meeting hosted by the Justice Department’s Community Relations Service on July 29, he apologized to the over 500 antagonistic attendees for Massey’s passing, offered no justifications, and pleaded for their forgiveness as well as Springfield’s.

But he went on, stating that he had a responsibility to lead the agency, and he would not resign through turbulence.

“I am unable to resign,” he informed them. “At its most vulnerable point, I will not desert the sheriff’s department. That wouldn’t resolve anything.

Listening, learning, and “looking for ways to improve, to ensure we hire and train the best possible employees we can” were Campbell’s pledges.

Democratic governor of Illinois J.B. Pritzker said on Wednesday that Campbell should step down, saying that didn’t happen.

More than a month after the incident, according to Pritzker, Campbell still hadn’t spoken with Massey’s family, demonstrated that he had changed his training, or given an explanation for hiring someone with what Pritzker described as a questionable background with prior law enforcement organizations.

During a press conference, Pritzker declared, “The sheriff has failed.”

Campbell did not reply right away Friday for a Washington Post request for comments.

According to a statement issued by civil rights attorney Ben Crump, Massey’s family stated that Campbell’s departure “marks a turning point in the continued pursuit of justice for Sonya Massey.”

However, those family declared that they will collaborate with Campbell to assist the town recover for the remainder of his term, as well as with his successor to investigate the shooting in order to “ensure that a tragedy like this never happens again in this community.”

Campbell announced his retirement and pledged to modify the department’s procedures to ensure that a tragedy similar to Massey’s death would not occur again.

He also claimed to have been proactive and forthright in the wake of the shooting.

That has been my true goal ever since that tragic day,” he penned.

He moderated the rhetoric and asked people to get together.

In his statement, he said, “We will only succeed as a community if we lower the stakes and make the commitment to improve.”

“By making sure that no one else becomes a victim of such a tragic and senseless action, we must honor the life of Sonya Massey.”
