In preparation for the state’s impending primary, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis took part in a CNN town hall on Tuesday in New Hampshire.

The Republican candidate for president, who trailed former President Donald Trump in Monday’s Iowa caucus, answered questions from voters in New Hampshire on a variety of topics.

Here is a fact check on a few of the statements made by DeSantis at the town hall.

DeSantis bragged about finishing ahead of former UN Ambassador Nikki Haley in the Iowa caucuses, in second place.

Even though, in his opinion, she only paid for TV commercials criticizing him and defending former President Donald Trump, he still beat her.

“She devoted all of her DeSantis asserted, “There is money attacking me and not a single cent attacking Donald Trump.” “And I had to deal with nearly $50 million overall.

She did not place first, and I did first the facts: Most of this is true, but it needs context.

Yes, Haley’s campaign and its allies spent almost all of their money in Iowa on DeSantis.

However, they have poured millions of dollars into attacking Trump in other states, such as New Hampshire, where the most recent polls show her to be more competitive.

The governor of Florida has good reason to be concerned about Haley’s expenditures in Iowa.

Haley and her supporters have spent a great deal more money this past year attacking DeSantis than they have on Trump.

AdImpact data shows that Haley’s campaign and its affiliated super PACs have spent $12.5 million on TV commercials that specifically target DeSantis, at least $9.8 million of which are shown in Iowa.

However, data from AdImpact shows that Haley and her supporters have also spent roughly $2.9 million on Trump-critiquing TV commercials over the previous year.

These advertisements have almost exclusively appeared in New Hampshire, not Iowa.

Super PAC SFA Fund, which backs Haley, has spent more than $500,000 running an advertisement refuting some of Trump’s remarks by claiming that his entire campaign has been “one temper tantrum after another, based on revenge.”

The same organization has also invested more than $1 million in an additional anti-Trump advertisement, asking, “Why is Donald Trump only criticizing Nikki Haley? Since Trump is aware that Haley is the only opponent who can defeat him from David Wright of CNN along with Marshall Cohen inmates of a New York City school.

When asked how he would handle the problem of illegal immigrants entering the US, DeSantis chastised officials in New York City for temporarily placing asylum seekers in a school.

He declared, “New York City had to close a school.” Children are literally being told not to go to school because the school was taken over and turned into a place to house illegal aliens.

First the facts: DeSantis’ remark needs clarification. In order to protect them from a storm last week, 1,900 asylum seekers were relocated by New York City Mayor Eric Adams and his administration from a tent shelter in Floyd Bennett Field in Brooklyn to James Madison High School for a single night.

The next day, the high school pupils attended class virtually day, and the following day went back to the Brooklyn school.

Parents and local politicians expressed outrage over the one-day school closure. Since the spring of 2022, Adams and local authorities have had difficulty managing and housing the migrants, most of whom are from Texas, who are being bused to New York.

Later that week, the mayor justified his use of the high school by stating, “We’ve always used our school buildings during emergencies,” on ABC’s GMA3.

From Tami Luhby of CNN the pandemic and Florida

DeSantis charged that former President Donald Trump had “turned over the government” to Dr. Anthony Fauci, the former director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases from 1984 to 2022, over his handling of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Next, he stated that Florida “dragged this country out of lockdown,” and that “we made sure businesses were open and schools were open.”

First the facts: DeSantis’ assertion is, at most, deceptive. Before he became a vocal opponent of pandemic restrictions, DeSantis imposed significant restrictions on individuals, businesses and other entities in Florida in March 2020 and April 2020; some of them extended months later.

He didn’t keep the state open from the beginning, but he did open it up later on in a phased manner.

DeSantis received criticism in March 2020 for what some critics perceived as a lax approach to the pandemic, which intensified as Florida beaches were packed during Spring Break.

But that month and the month following, DeSantis issued a number of significant limitations.

As an instance, DeSantis:

• Closed Florida’s schools, initially in March 2020 for a brief period of time and then again in April 2020 for the duration of the academic year.

(He revealed plans in June 2020 for the reopening of schools for the August 2020 school year.

By October 2020, he was openly criticizing the closing of schools, labeling them an enormous error, and claiming that not all the facts had been known since March.)

• Declared on March 14, 2020, that most visits to nursing homes would be prohibited. (In September 2020, he lifted the ban.)
• Directed restaurants to run at half capacity and bars and nightclubs to close for 30 days starting on March 17, 2020.

Later, he gave his approval to a phased reopening plan that required subsequently issued an order permitting these establishments to run at full capacity in September 2020 after going into effect in May 2020.)

• Ordered the closure of public beaches in two populated counties, Broward and Palm Beach, three days after ordering that gatherings on public beaches be restricted to a maximum of 10 people who must remain at least six feet apart on March 17, 2020.

(He approved the reopening of the beaches in those counties by the latter part of May.)

• Outlawed “any medically unnecessary, non-urgent or non-emergency” medical procedures on March 20, 2020. (The ban was removed in the first part of May 2020.)

• Directed on March 23, 2020, that anyone traveling to Florida from a region experiencing “significant community transmission” of the virus—which encompasses the New York Tri-State Area (Connecticut, New Jersey)—mustand New York),” place them under isolation or quarantine for 14 days, or for the length of their stay in Florida, whichever is shorter, or risk paying a fine or going to jail.

He added Louisiana to the list later that week. (He removed the restrictions on Louisiana in June 2020 and the remaining ones in August 2020.)

A statewide stay-at-home order was implemented on April 3, 2020, mandating individuals in Florida to restrict their outside-of-home movements and interactions to those that are strictly necessary for obtaining or providing essential services or carrying out essential activities.

(The state adopted a phased reopening plan starting in May 2020, which for months included significant limitations on the operations of companies and other entities. DeSantis referred to this plan as a “extremely methodical and slow approach” to reopening.)

Pro-LGBTQ assistance for Bangladesh

DeSantis argued that taxpayer money is “going overseas to do things like promote ‘transgenderism’ in Bangladesh” in support of cutting back on government spending.

Facts First: Some background is required. Although the US Agency for International Development has funded LGBTQ rights initiatives in Bangladesh, these initiatives only account for a small portion of the federal agency’s overall budget.

Under the Trump administration, the particular USAID program that was involved in these efforts was started in June 2018 and concluded in June 2021. According to USAID records, the program cost $849,535 over its three years.

When the fiscal year 2021 came to an end, USAID reported having spent nearly $30 billion. This indicates that Bangladesh’s pro-LGBTQ initiative was less than 0.003% of the money spent by the organization in that year.

Launched last year, there is at least one more USAID program that supports LGBTQ rights in Bangladesh. In response to questions from CNN, representatives for USAID declined to disclose the program’s estimated five-year cost.

DeSantis on Sanctions Against Iran

DeSantis tried to set himself apart from President Joe Biden when responding to a voter’s question about how he would handle Iran if elected, claiming that Biden “relaxed sanctions on Iran.”

Facts First: More context is needed for this claim.

A few sanctions against Iran have been lifted by the Biden administration, which claims to have done so due to a “verified change in status or behavior.” Still,

Facts First: More context is needed for this claim.

A few sanctions against Iran have been lifted by the Biden administration, which claims to have done so due to a “verified change in status or behavior.”

But Biden has also kept a number of additional sanctions in place and applied them to Iran.

The Biden administration, like the Trump administration, has granted waivers to enable Iraq to buy electricity from Iran.
