A jury determines that a former Trump lawyer and a mayor of New York must compensate two poll workers in Georgia who he falsely accused of engaging in election fraud.
Rudy Giuliani was ordered by a federal jury on Friday to pay $148 million to two election workers who had sued him for defamation.
They claimed that by spreading false information that they had stolen the 2020 Georgia election from the former president, the former Trump lawyer had subjected them to a barrage of abuse and trauma that had changed their lives.

After deliberating for over nine hours, the panel of five women and three men in Washington arrived at a startling penalty that exceeded by more than three times the $48 million that the
workers, in the first significant ruling against a person connected to Trump for spreading the false narrative that vote fraud gave President Biden the advantage in the election.
The Fulton County, Georgia, election workers Ruby Freeman and Wander Ars Haye “Shaye” Moss received a damages verdict in a defamation lawsuit against Giuliani, 79, which was brought by them after Trump and other members of the former president’s campaign and legal teams falsely accused them of tampering with the absentee ballot count in Atlanta.

Standing outside the courthouse alongside Moss, Freeman declared, “Today is a good day,” following a jury’s award of $73 million in compensatory damages and $75 million in punitive damages for the mother and daughter pair’s emotional distress and defamation.
During their closing arguments, their lawyers had asked the jury to “send a message” to Giuliani and other people.
In the realm of public life, “facts matter.” “Giuliani was not the only one who spread lies about us, and others must be held accountable, too,” Moss continued on Friday.
Following his attorney’s warning to the jury that a penalty of tens of millions of dollars could mean “the end” for the former mayor of New York and former Manhattan U.S.
Prosecutor—whose law license had previously been suspended due to his election-related lies—the jury’s decision represents a stunning setback for Giuliani.
Additionally, it places the debt-ridden, defiant Giuliani close to the top of a lengthy list of Trump advisors and media partners who could face legal repercussions for spreading his untrue accusations.
Fox News consented to pay Dominion Voting Systems nearly $780 million in April to resolve a lawsuit alleging that by spreading untrue allegations that its apparatus had flipped votes from Trump to Biden, the network tarnished the standing of the voting machine manufacturer.
Georgia 2020 election probe
Dominion and another voting machine manufacturer, Smartmatic, are suing media outlets, Giuliani, former Trump attorney Sidney Powell, and other parties in their own right.
Additionally, Democratic lawmakers and Capitol Police officers have sued Trump for damages related to the attack on the Capitol building on January 6, 2021.
But Giuliani is among the first Trump associates to be found guilty by a jury, which could be concerning for him given that he is being charged criminally in Georgia for allegedly conspiring to thwart Biden’s win there.
Additionally, Giuliani is listed in Trump’s indictment as an uncharged “Co-conspirator 1” on federal charges in Washington for obstructing the election of 2020.

After the decision, Giuliani showed no remorse, as he falsely claimed that “I have not been allowed to offer one single piece of evidence in defense, of which I have a lot” and told reporters outside the courthouse, “The absurdity of the number underscores the absurdity of the entire proceeding.”
Earlier this year, U.S. District Judge Beryl A. Howell found Giuliani liable by default based on his own admissions, his refusal to provide the women’s attorneys with the evidence in the case, and pertinent information about his net worth and the size of his audiences on YouTube, radio, and other websites.
Thus, the only task for the jury during his week-long trial was to determine the punishment for one count each of defamation and purposeful emotional distress.
On the basis of sixteen statements made against the workers, there was civil conspiracy and distress.
The false allegations were viewed 35 million times online and in media reports starting in December 2020, according to a plaintiffs’ expert’s testimony.
This week, the women testified, detailing the racist and violent attacks they experienced as a result of Giuliani’s remarks.
Despite stating in public that he would testify, Giuliani chose not to dispute the case’s facts and did not provide testimony in his own defense.

Outside the courthouse on Monday, Giuliani continued his attacks on the two employees. Three days later, defense lawyer Joseph D. Sibley IV told the jury during closing arguments that his client had chosen not to testify because the women “have been through enough.”
Sibley persuaded the jury of Giuliani claimed that the election workers were the victims of “a controversy involving a lot of people, not just Rudy Giuliani,” and that he did not intend or author any of the threatening or racist remarks made to Freeman and Moss.
As a result, he should not be subjected to a “catastrophic” punishment on his own.
Even though “he hasn’t exactly helped himself with some of the things that happened in the past few days,” Sibley said, “Mr. Giuliani is a good man.”
Unlike his courtroom defense, Giuliani persisted in portraying himself—as Trump has done as well—as a victim of a legal system that has been “weaponized” by political opponents after the verdict, outside of the courtroom.
On appeal, Giuliani declared that he was “quite confident” that the case would be overturned “before a fair tribunal.”
“The 2020 election must be made public because, in the alternative, our nation will cease to be a democracy,” he continued.
Shortly after, someone yelled from the crowd, “You’re a liar, Rudy.” In prison, you will perish.
Attorney Michael Gottlieb asked jurors during the closing arguments to remind powerful people that they have “no right to offer defenseless civil servants up to a virtual mob” or to assassinate the character of ordinary people in order to gain notoriety and profit.
