Teamsters are refusing to support Trump or Harris in the US presidential election.
Despite polling showing that the majority of its members preferred Republican candidate Donald Trump over Democrat Kamala Harris, the International Brotherhood of Teamsters announced on Wednesday that the union will not support any candidate running for president of the United States.
The union, which has 1.3 million members and represents a variety of workers from zookeepers to airline pilots, released a nationwide electronic poll of its members on Wednesday, revealing that rank-and-file members preferred the former president over Vice President Harris by a margin of 59.6% to 34%.
Since 2000, the Teamsters have supported every Democratic nominee for president; however, they have also occasionally supported Republicans, such as Vice President George H.W.
Bush in 1988 and President Ronald Reagan in 1984.
It’s the union is not endorsing for the first time since 1996.
The United Auto Workers union, among the majority of significant unions, has endorsed Harris. Harris received support in July from the AFL-CIO, which is made up of 12.5 million workers and 60 unions.
The Teamsters executive board’s support had been much anticipated since it was thought to have an impact on several battleground states that would determine the outcome of the election on November 5, including as Pennsylvania, Michigan, and Nevada, all of which have high union membership rates.
In an interview with Fox News, Teamsters President Sean O’Brien explained the union’s decision, saying, “We couldn’t get solid commitments on our core issues.”
“I believe that not endorsing someone sends a message to both parties, asking them to reconsider and comprehend what it means to genuinely support working people” because everything must be gained; nothing is given.”
A spokesperson for Harris’ campaign, Lauren Hitt, pointed out that some Teamsters locals have endorsed Harris in spite of the national union decision.

They will not offer the Democrats their support. It’s quite significant.
In a subsequent study, the union revealed that independent polling firm Lake Research Partners discovered that Teamsters members chose Trump by 58% in a survey that concluded on September 15th, following the presidential debate on September 10th for more than 31% of Harris’s endorsement.
Following their January meeting with Trump, O’Brien and other union representatives met with Harris on Monday.
