Melton passed away just over a week after another drill sergeant was discovered deceased at the Army’s principal facility for basic combat training.

Staff Sergeant Allen M. Burtram, 34, of the 2nd Battalion, 13th Infantry Regiment, was discovered dead on December 8 after failing to report for duty, according to the Army.

Both deaths are being looked into by the US Army Criminal Investigation Division. The Army stated that there was no proof of foul play in Burtram’s demise.

On Thursday, Melton’s unit completed its final cycle of basic training. The Huntsville, Alabama, native had served for over ten years in the Army, the last three of which were spent as a drill sergeant.

Burtram, an Alabama native from Cleveland, served in the Army for 12 years, seeing deployment the Army claims that he served in Korea for 12 months and in Kuwait for 8 months.

The military claims that Fort Jackson, which is close to Columbia, South Carolina, is home to more than 3,500 active-duty soldiers.
