President Andrés Manuel López Obrador and Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken will meet as record numbers of people cross borders and as a caravan of migrants makes its way toward the United States.

In an effort to come up with a plan to slow the increase in unauthorized border crossings at the southern U.S. border, Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken and other senior American officials spoke with the president of Mexico on Wednesday about the underlying causes of migration.

Ched record levels and pressure is mounting on Mr. Biden to resolve, or at least contain, a crisis that has proven to be a persistent susceptibility to political change.

Some of Mr. Biden’s top priorities for 2024 revolve around the border situation, especially in light of Republican demands in Congress for a renewed immigration crackdown in return for aid to Israel and Ukraine during the war.

“We are dedicated to working with Mexico to address our shared challenges, such as managing the region’s unprecedented irregular migration, reopening important ports of entry, and combating illicit fentanyl and other synthetic drugs, as we made clear in Mexico City today,” Mr. Blinken wrote in a post on X.

Due to the influx of migrants in recent weeks, border officials have been forced to temporarily close the port of entry in Lukeville, Arizona, as well as several railroad crossings in Texas.

Those were designed to enable border officials to reallocate their staff in order to address the circumstance.

However, the decision caused business disruptions in Mexico and the United States. Mexican Secretary of Foreign Affairs Alicia Bárcena Ibarra stated on Wednesday that “the importance of reopening the border crossings is a priority for us.”
