According to the Federal Bureau of Investigation, “court-authorized law enforcement activity” was carried out at a Conway home on Wednesday.

“This action is related to an ongoing criminal civil rights investigation involving allegations of racial discrimination,” stated in a statement FBI Special Agent in Charge of the Columbia division, Steve Jensen.

In order to fully investigate this issue, we are collaborating with the U.S. Attorney’s Office as well as our local and state partners.

The residence of a couple who were detained last month for allegedly bothering their next-door neighbors was observed to have an FBI presence.

A police report filed late last month claimed that the couple, Worden Butler, 28, and Alexis Hartnett, 27, both of White, “harassed and stalked the victims with racially motivated words and actions.”

Butler allegedly shouted racial epithets at a victim “because she was Black,” according to the police report.

The police report states that Butler and Hartnett allegedly built a cross facing the victims’ house and set it on fire over Thanksgiving weekend.

Responding officers interviewed the victims, and Hartnett allegedly “continued this behavior even after being advised [by] officers to go back inside her home” and made a racial slur directed toward the victims.

“The victims feel that the suspects are a danger to their safety and the incidents are getting more frequent and threatening,” said the report.

According to the police report, Butler also allegedly posted on Facebook, “summoning the devil’s army and I don’t care if they and I both go down in the same boat,” along with a picture of the victims’ mailbox that included their address.

After being taken into custody on November 30, Butler and Hartnett were accused of second-degree harassment, a misdemeanor.

Additionally, Hartnett was accused of third-degree assault, a offense against the law. The next day, they were both set free.

Butler and Hartnett were unreachable by ABC News, and their lawyer did not promptly reply to a message requesting comment.

Chief Joseph Hil of the Horry County Police Department described the incidents as “appalling and unacceptable.”

In a statement last week, Hill declared, “Such hate and harassment will not be tolerated in Horry County.”

“Those in charge will face consequences for their deeds and the harm they have inflicted upon the victims and the larger Horry County community.

We shall work together with our regional and local partners to seek justice to the fullest extent of the law.”

There is no legislation in South Carolina that permits hate crimes to carry greater penalties.

Over the previous three years, a the Associated Press reports that a hate crime bill passed the South Carolina State House but died on the Senate floor.

Following the couple’s apprehension, groups such as the NAACP and the Council on American-Islamic Relations have advocated for the passage of a hate crime legislation in South Carolina.
