Tuesday’s hectic day in Washington came to an end with a press conference with President Joe Biden, who stated that Ukraine’s “freedom is on the line” because a significant military aid package is still stuck in Congress due to Republican demands for significant changes to border policy.

After their meeting in the Oval Office, the two leaders gave a statement to the media outlining their plans for Ukraine’s future and the part the United States should play in aiding the country of Eastern Europe in fending off Russia’s invasion.

“[Vladimir] Putin is banking on the United States failing to deliver for Ukraine,” Biden stated. “We have to disprove him. We really have to. The United States Congress needs to take action.

“Mr. President, I will not walk away from Ukraine and neither will the American people,” was another message that Biden had for Zelenskyy.

Zelenskyy expressed gratitude to the United States for its assistance, stating that the two countries could “strengthen democracy’s arsenal.”

Zelenskyy’s visit notwithstanding, it seems that Congress is about to adjourn for the winter break without reaching a consensus on the Biden-backed supplemental aid package, which includes billions of dollars for border enforcement, Taiwan, Israel, and Ukraine.

Republicans are entangling the funding in a legislative battle because they want major changes to immigration and border security, though it’s still unclear what exactly they want to see changed.

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, a fervent advocate for ongoing assistance to Ukraine, expressed pessimism about the impasse By the time lawmakers take their Christmas break, it would have been broken.

Even if an agreement is reached quickly, McConnell told reporters earlier on Tuesday that it was “practically impossible” to complete the funding package before Christmas.

But he added that the border needs to be addressed.

“When it comes to keeping America safe, border security is not a side show — it is ground zero,” he stated.

“I’ve… made very clear from day one that our first condition on any national security supplemental spending package is about our own national security,” House Speaker Mike Johnson repeated to reporters.

“The border is an absolute catastrophe,” he stated.

Republicans are pressuring the White House to participate more actively in the talks, and Biden Republicans were accused on Tuesday of sabotaging vital aid.

“If you’re being celebrated by Russian propagandists, it might be time to rethink what you’re doing,” he stated.

In an effort to find a “bipartisan compromise” on border policy, Biden said his team is collaborating with Senate Republicans and Democrats. He added that Congress must act “to fix the broken immigration system here at home.”

“Compromise is how democracy works, and I’m ready and offered compromise already,” he stated. “Holding Ukraine’s funding hostage in an attempt to force through an extreme Republican partisan agenda on the border is not how it works.”

When asked if he felt more concerned than he should have been or if he had heard what he wanted from lawmakers in his own meetings on Capitol Hill on Tuesday, Zelenskyy had previously stated that although he felt support, he had to “separate” words from deeds.

“I got the signals, they were more than positive,” he stated. However, we are aware that words and specific outcomes must be kept apart. Thus, we will rely on a specific outcome.”

House Republicans have come under fire from Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., for their plans to take a recess at the end of the week.

“They say it’s an emergency at both the border and in Ukraine — you don’t go home for three weeks,” Schumer stated.

Republicans in the Senate concur that they ought to remain in the city until they can reach a consensus.

“It is reckless in my opinion to not negotiate, walk away, and let us go for two or three weeks without negotiating. We must move in real time,” Thom Tillis of North Carolina said to Mary Bruce, the chief White House correspondent for ABC News.

Biden announced a $200 million military package under the presidential drawdown authority earlier on Tuesday during his meeting with Zelenskyy in the Oval Office.

The fund is running low, which is why the administration is asking Congress for more.

The two were also supposed to talk about ways to support Ukraine’s aid and the possibility of Ukraine joining the EU.

“Everything we discussed today will be beneficial to us in 2024,” Zelenskyy declared in the aftermath.

The talks with the speaker today in both chambers of congress and the white house were very fruitful for both parties.

And as Christmas draws near, I appreciate the support from both parties.
on behalf of every family in Ukraine that we know.”
