Officials in the Illinois city said that Texas Governor Greg Abbott (R) arranged for 100 asylum seekers to be transported by charter plane from his state to Chicago on Tuesday night.

Why this matters In a year that has seen record numbers of families cross the border from Mexico to the U.S. amid a global humanitarian crisis, Abbott’s criticism of President Biden’s immigration policies has taken a significant turn for the worse. Tens of thousands of migrants have been bused from Texas to primarily Democratic-run cities.

The first migrant flight to be chartered by the Texas state government comes after Chicago’s recent crackdown on “rogue” bus operators who, according to local officials, have broken city regulations.

Specifics: In an email sent on Wednesday night, a City of Chicago representative stated that police were informed, at approximately 7:15 p.m. local time, of the group of asylum seekers’ arrival at O’Hare Airport on a “private plane chartered by the Texas Department of Emergency Management”.

Two “unidentified individuals who flew with the plane reportedly fled Signature Flight and left the scene” in a taxi before police arrived, the spokesperson said the flight from El Paso, Texas, dropped the group off at Signature Flight, a network that supports private aviation.

“The City is currently working to find space in the shelter system for all asylum seekers currently staying at O’Hare Airport.”

Current situation: According to a Chicago migrant dashboard, 4,252 migrants have arrived by air; however, they have typically been sent on commercial flights by groups such as Catholic Charities of Houston.

Texas’ most recent the action seems to be a direct reaction to a new law in Chicago that went into effect a week ago.

This law permits city officials to impound buses that are sent from Texas, provided that they have not been notified 48 hours in advance and/or do not arrive at the designated landing zone or during the designated hours of 8 p.m. to 5:30 p.m., Monday through Friday.

In an interview with the Chicago Tribune last week, Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson stated that “bus companies, contracted by the State of Texas, flagrantly violate all safety measures.”

What they’re saying: Abbott posted on Wednesday to X, stating, “Sanctuary city Chicago started obstructing and targeting our busing mission.” “We’re going to start offering flights to Chicago from Texas.

“We will not stop until Biden takes the initiative to secure the border.

Deliver much-needed relief to border towns in Texas that are overburdened.”
The mystery: Chicago officials informed Axios that earlier this week, they ceased to regularly update Texas officials on the number of buses being sent to the city.

Abbott representatives did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Axios.
