Harvard board retains president as head of Ivy League school after backlash against antisemitism
Harvard’s highest governing body declared on Tuesday that President Claudine Gay will continue to lead the esteemed Ivy League institution in light of her remarks made during a congressional hearing on antisemitism last week.
The Harvard Corporation released a statement after its meeting on Monday, saying, “Our extensive deliberations affirm our confidence that President Gay is the right leader to help our community heal and to address the very serious societal issues we are facing.”

After the hearing in which Gay and two of her peers found it difficult to respond to questions regarding antisemitism on campus in the wake of the most recent Israel-Hamas war, which broke out in early October, Gay found herself under intense scrutiny just months into her leadership role.
Republican opponents and alumni, as well as donors, expressed disapproval of their academic responses, claiming that university administrators are not doing enough to defend Jewish students on their campuses.
After Liz Magill resigned as president of the University of Pennsylvania on Saturday, some legislators and benefactors of the institution demanded that Gay step down as well.

More than 600 faculty members had signed a petition requesting that Gay remain in charge of the school’s governing body.
The question of whether advocating for the extermination of Jews would be against the university’s code of conduct was at issue. Gay stated during the hearing that it was dependent on the situation and that “conduct that violates our policies” occurs when “speech crosses into speech.”

“Genocide calls are abhorrent and at odds with basic human principles. President Gay pledged to intensify the university’s efforts to combat antisemitism and expressed regret for the way she handled her congressional testimony.
Gay claimed she was drawn into a contentious exchange at the House committee hearing and neglected to appropriately denounce threats of violence against Jewish students in an interview with the student newspaper The Harvard Crimson last week.
“In that situation, I ought to have had the foresight to go back to my guiding principle, which forbids using violence
threats to our Jewish students or against our Jewish community have no place at Harvard and will always be met with resistance, according to Gay.

The national response to the testimony of Gay and Magill was fierce, as was the case with the MIT president’s remarks, who also testified before the Republican-led House Education and Workforce Committee.
Rep Elise Stefanik, R-New York, a member of the committee who frequently questioned the presidents of the universities about whether or not “calling for the genocide of Jews” would be against school policy, expressed her disapproval of the school’s decision on X, the social media platform.

“Harvard’s code of conduct has not been updated in the slightest to denounce calls for the genocide of Jews and to safeguard Jewish students on campus,” the speaker stated.
“The only modification to Harvard’s code of behavior is to permit copycats to hold the presidency.
According to the school, an independent investigation into Gay’s alleged plagiarism discovered three instances of “inadequate citation,” but no other wrongdoing.

The announcement of the decision was made on the Harvard campus while instructors and students were running to classes. Psychology visiting professor Gunduz Vassaf stated that he is in favor of Gay.
“Her testimony before Congress has my complete support. Vassaf stated, “I do think that the situation has been taken out of context in the emotions of the moment.
“This is protected speech as long as there isn’t incitement or a call for violence,” he continued.
Harvard student Evan Routhier said he agrees with Gay.
“Since she took over, I’ve had positive experiences,” he stated.
People on campus were drawn to the news.
The director of Aish Campus Boston, Rabbi Chananel Weiner, stated that he came to Harvard to express support for the student body.

“The ideas that are being spread here are really against the Jewish people, and we need to resist them,” he stated. This is the core of academia. The Jewish people are under attack, and we are being attacked from all sides.
Celebrity attorney Alan Dershowitz, a Harvard Law School professor and longtime supporter of Israel, stated on Tuesday that Gay’s advocacy of a diversity, equity, and inclusion bureaucracy “that has become an incubator for antisemitism” was wrong for the Harvard Corporation to endorse.
He stated that he hopes Gay transforms her opinions on free speech to guarantee equal treatment for all.
She is currently in charge of a risky double standard that allows free speech criticizing some groups but not others.
Either limited restrictions applied equally or free speech for all must be decided upon by the school. She is the wrong person in the wrong job at the wrong time because she hasn’t been a champion for that kind of equality, he said.
Harvard’s decision, according to a grassroots watchdog group called Stop Antisemitism, “serves only to greenlight more Jew-hatred on campus,” as they stated on X. It stated that it still demands Gay’s resignation and pleaded with the company to think twice.
Protests, antisemitism, and Islamophobia have erupted on college campuses across the country since the beginning of the Gaza War two months ago, placing college administrators on the defensive across the country.
The company also addressed the claims of plagiarism made against Gay, stating that three articles she had written had been brought to Harvard’s attention in late October.
At Gay’s request, it started an independent review.
The company said that after reviewing the data on Saturday, “which revealed a few instances of inadequate citation,” it had discovered no instances of research misconduct in violation of Harvard’s guidelines.
According to the statement, Gay is proactively asking for four corrections in two articles to add quotation marks and citations that were left out of the original publications.
The announcement from Harvard was made on the same day that numerous eminent universities were the subject of fresh federal investigations due to claims of Islamophobia or antisemitism.
The University of California-San Diego, Stanford, UCLA, University of Washington-Seattle, Rutgers University, and Whitman College are all the targets of civil rights investigations, according to a statement released by the U.S.
Education Department. Information regarding the complaints was kept private. These universities join Harvard, Penn, Cornell, Columbia, and a few more that have been the subject of departmental inquiry since October 7.
