While detectives look into the boyfriend of a missing Capitola woman who vanished in early December, he was a founding member of a well-known rock band from the 1990s.

Alice “Alyx” Kamakaokalani Herrmann, 61, was last seen in Santa Cruz, where she belonged to an outrigger canoe club, on December 3 or 4, according to friends and family.

She went to a club meeting on December 3 and was reported missing on December 12 after she didn’t answer calls or texts for a while.

Investigators in El Cerrito are said to have found her red 2007 Toyota Highlander parked in front of her boyfriend’s house while searching for her. Officers recognized that man as 54-year-old El Cerrito resident Theobald “Theo” Brooks Lengyel.

In the days following Herrmann’s disappearance, Lengyel is thought to have driven from the Bay Area to Portland, Oregon, according to El Cerrito police investigators.

“Regional park and open space users who spend time there are asked to be on the lookout for anything suspicious that might lead to Alice’s whereabouts,” according to the request.

The brother of the missing woman, Eric Herrmann, told SFGATE on Tuesday that police are following leads in Capitola and El Cerrito and executing search warrants.

Lengyel was previously described by El Cerrito police as a “person of interest” and as being uncooperative with the investigation.

Police “think he is back in the Bay Area, but still do not know how to get ahold of him,” according to ABC7 of him.

Alice Herrmann attended Caltech and has a history of working as a software engineer at several Bay Area companies, according to her LinkedIn page.

Eric Herrmann told SFGATE, “She’s very talented, loves music, and is very active outdoors, especially in ocean outrigger canoeing, where she competed internationally.”

SFGATE was informed by El Cerrito police that Lengyel was formerly a part of the funk-metal group Mr. Bungle. From 1985 until the mid-1990s, Lengyel played with the band for almost ten years, mostly on the saxophone.

A bandmate claimed in a 2005 Q&A that Lengyel left on bad terms.
