Republicans in Congress are attempting to remove President Joe Biden from office, and Biden called this “baseless.”

On Wednesday, the House of Representatives took a vote to formally begin the process of impeaching Biden, and not a single Republican voted against the motion.

Republicans assert that the president benefited from his son Hunter Biden’s business ventures during the same period he served as vice president from 2009 to 2017.

The White House issued the following statement

“Instead of doing their job on the urgent work that needs to be done, they are choosing to waste time on this baseless political stunt that even Republicans in Congress admit is not supported by facts.”

Additionally, he charged Republicans of putting off crucial House issues in favor of party strife and what the president perceives as his own retaliatory measures.

As Biden put it, “there is a lot of work to be done.”

“But after wasting weeks trying to find a new Speaker of the House and having to expel their own members, Republicans in Congress are leaving for a month without doing anything to address these pressing challenges.”

Republicans have claimed that formalizing the process will enable them to subpoena the White House for records and testimony as part of the investigation, even though there is currently no proof of any wrongdoing by Biden.

Over 40,000 pages of bank records have already been subpoenaed, and hours of witness testimony—including from members of the public—have been provided of the department of Justice.

Formalizing the process also means that the investigation will continue until 2024, which could cause the Biden campaign trouble given that the current president is running for reelection in 2024.

There’s no denying the possibility of impeachment, with up to three committees controlled by the GOP deciding whether to proceed. The House, which has a slim Republican majority, would then be the venue for a vote.

If the GOP wanted to move forward, it could afford to lose just three votes.

The only thing that has happened to three presidents before is impeachment; however, in this instance, the Senate, which is controlled by Democrats, would have to hear the case.

Several Republicans have voiced skepticism regarding the investigation, and Colorado Republican Ken Buck told CNN this past weekend that It was “not the way to run a Congress.”

“This is not the way to run a House,” he continued. Retaliation impeachments and retribution politics are not what we should be doing.”

In spite of this, Buck and Representative Don Bacon of Nebraska voted to formalize the proceedings.

Danielle Jensen, the director of communications for Bacon, previously told Newsweek “At this time, there isn’t a vote for impeachment. Just a question.

Because the administration has been stalling for the past few weeks, claiming that a formal impeachment inquiry has not been put to a vote, he is supporting the investigation.”
