This week’s scheduled removal of the Confederate Memorial from Arlington National Cemetery (ANC) has infuriated the Republican congressman spearheading the movement to halt the monument’s 109-year-old dismantling.

400,000 people are buried in the country’s largest military cemetery in Arlington County, Virginia, and the Confederate Memorial will be taken down before December 22 despite growing criticism from dozens of Republican members of Congress.

The Republican representative from Georgia, Andrew Clyde, has spearheaded the attempt to postpone the monument’s removal.

In a letter to Department of Defense (DOD) Secretary Lloyd Austin last week, Clyde and more than forty of his House GOP colleagues demanded that the DOD “immediately suspend all removal activities” connected to the memorial, which is occasionally called the “Reconciliation Monument,” according to a December 11 statement from Clyde’s office.

In its report to Congress last year on the renaming of military bases and property that honor the Confederacy, an independent commission recommended that the memorial be taken down.

The memorial “does not honor nor commemorate the Confederacy; the memorial commemorates reconciliation and national unity,” the Republicans argued in their letter to the DOD, arguing that it should remain in place.

In an email to Newsweek on Sunday, Kerry Meeker, an ANC spokesperson, stated that cemetery officials are “complying with a Congressionally mandated requirement to remove the Confederate Memorial by Jan. 1, 2024.”

Meeker stated to Newsweek that after the Confederate Memorial is taken down, nothing will stand in its place.

In an article published on Sunday on X, formerly Twitter, Clyde criticized the decision to move forward with demolishing the monument.

“Joe Biden’s woke DOD intends to move forward with its misguided plan to remove the Reconciliation Monument—which commemorates national unity—from Arlington National Cemetery,” Clyde stated on X. “The Left wants division and destruction—not unity and reconciliation.”

Section 16 of the ANC is where the memorial site is located, and as of Sunday, a safety fence has been put up to keep people out. According to Meeker’s statement, the monument will be carefully taken down and moved.

An ANC statement said, “All bronze elements of the memorial will be relocated.” “The granite base and foundation will remain in place to avoid disturbing surrounding graves.”

This Friday, Meeker told Newsweek, the Confederate Memorial will be placed in temporary storage in a secure DOD facility in Virginia “until the final disposition has been determined.”

According to the website of the cemetery, the memorial was unveiled in 1914 and presents a “nostalgic, mythologized vision of the Confederacy, including highly sanitized depictions of slavery.

” The American South is represented by a 32-foot-tall bronze “classical female figure” with an olive leaf crown. At her feet is a Biblical inscription that reads, “They have beat their swords into plough-shares and their spears into pruning hooks.” She is carrying a laurel wreath, a plow stock, and a pruning hook.

Perched atop a pedestal, the statue holds four cinerary urns, one for each year of the conflict, and is bolstered by a frieze featuring fourteen shields, one for each of the bordering states of Maryland, Kentucky, and Missouri as well as the eleven Confederate states.

Thirty-two life-size figures of Southern soldiers and civilians alongside mythical gods adorn the monument.

One of those figures shows a slave woman dressed like a “Mammy” and carrying a white soldier’s child. According to ANC, another is portrayed as a slave who follows his master into battle.

According to the ANC website, the monument was created by American sculptor Moses Jacob Ezekiel, a Confederate veteran and the first Jewish graduate of Virginia Military Institute.

In 1921, Ezekiel was interred beside three other Confederate soldiers at the foot of his creation.
