On Monday, temperatures in several parts of Minnesota surpassed centuries-old records for Christmas Day.

In a post published on X, the website that was formerly known as Twitter, the Twin Cities Forecast Office of the National Weather Service (NWS) stated that St. Cloud, Minnesota, had a temperature of 48 degrees, which was higher than the previous record of 47 degrees set in 1922.

In addition, the NWS reported that on Christmas Day, temperatures at its stations in Eau Claire, Wisconsin, and Minneapolis-Saint Paul (MSP) International Airport broke records set in 1940 and 1922, respectively.

The NWS Twin Cities office also reported in a different post that the minimum temperatures at all three locations were record-high, with St. Cloud, MSP International Airport, and Eau Claire recording peaks of 36, 32, and 50 degrees, in that order.

In the three cities mentioned above, the temperatures all surpassed records set in 1936.

The El Niño weather pattern is expected to bring warmer-than-average temperatures and more precipitation this winter, as the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) warned earlier this month.

A climatic pattern known as El Niño occurs roughly every two to three years and raises sea temperatures near the equator.

Climate Prediction Center forecasters stated in a discussion post at the time that there was now a 54% chance of a “historically strong” El Niño during the November–January season, based on the most recent forecasts.

Forecasts from NOAA indicate that for the next few months, temperatures in the Pacific Northwest, New England, and the Midwest may be above average months.

According to the NWS, this week will see above-average temperatures in 68% of the country and above-average precipitation in 53% of it.
