Following the Colorado Supreme Court’s decision, several California politicians hurried to expedite efforts to declare Trump ineligible for the presidency.

Governor Gavin Newsom has a piece of advice for California lawmakers who are itching to follow Colorado’s example and keep former President Donald Trump off the ballot: calm down.

This week, the Colorado Supreme Court declared that Trump’s involvement in inciting the Jan. 6 uprising disqualified him from seeking the presidency.

The ruling gave new life to campaigns to remove the former president from office for violating the 14th Amendment in states all over the nation, including California.

However, Newsom signaled to his fellow California Democrats in a statement on Friday afternoon not to outshine the US Supreme Court, which will most likely serve as the ultimate judge in that matter.

“We defeat candidates at the polls in California, but there is no doubt that Donald Trump poses a threat to our liberties and even to our democracy,” Newsom stated. All other matters are mere political diversion.

Several attempts by elected officials to capitalize on the Colorado decision were thwarted by his remarks.

A letter was sent by Lt. Gov. Eleni Kounalakis, a candidate for governor of California in 2026, requesting that Secretary of State Shirley Weber of California “explore every legal option” to strike Trump from the ballot.

Democratic state senator Dave Min, a candidate for Congress from Orange County, announced that he would introduce a bill allowing Californians to file a lawsuit to prevent candidates who are ineligible; however, given the legislative calendar, it is all but unfeasible for a measure of that kind to be approved and implemented in time for the presidential primary on March 5.

A group of Democratic state legislators pushed California Attorney General Rob Bonta to use his authority to expedite a decision on whether Trump was not eligible to appear on the ballot months before the Colorado ruling was made.

Given his involvement on January 6, a broad national legal campaign has been launched to prevent Trump from being eligible.

Immediately after the Colorado ruling, which was the first in history to disqualify a presidential candidate under the 14th Amendment, some supporters accelerated their efforts.

A group of Michigan voters who were suing to prevent Trump from being included on the ballot sent a letter to the state supreme court using Colorado’s choice to present their case.

The Democratic secretary of state in Maine, Shenna Bellows, has invited attorneys on both sides to submit additional briefs in light of the Colorado ruling.

Bellows is reviewing complaints contesting Trump’s eligibility. Next week, she is going to make a decision.
