A major flood watch has been issued for multiple counties in Southern California, and many residents are getting ready as the storm approaches.

“We are going to benefit greatly from this rain, especially since it will be present for several days,” KTLA meteorologist Vera Jimenez stated.

Some areas have already experienced sporadic showers, and more substantial rainfall is predicted for late Tuesday night into early Wednesday morning.

The National Weather Service stated that there was a remote chance of a small, brief tornado, but otherwise, thunderstorms and lightning were expected. Santa Barbara, Ventura, and Los Angeles counties are the most vulnerable.

Residents in areas recently scarred by fire are getting ready for significant mudslides and flooding that could endanger lives and/or homes.

On Tuesday, Duarte officials installed K-rails close to Mel Canyon, a location notorious for catastrophic mudslides.

According to Duarte resident Brian Olivas, “it flooded the entire street.” “That is the reason the wall is located there. Boulders from the street were in my front yard after the [mudslide] destroyed it.

Olivas resides near the site of the June 2022 Fish Fire, which destroyed the foothills and caused unstable soil that led to significant mudslides during storm seasons.

According to Olivas, “they had the K-rails at the time, and the mud built up above the K-rails.”

Many neighbors agreed that the K-rails were necessary, despite some complaining that they cause parking problems.

“I believe they removed them” out for a short while, but after that they became fearful once more due to a smaller fire. “It feels like we have Formula 1 here, like we’re in Long Beach or something,” commented neighbor Lynn Stone.

According to city officials, the hillsides ought to withstand the impending storm.

“We approach it from a very localized perspective,” a municipal official from Duarte clarified. “We examine past rainfall patterns and the state of the vegetation growth.

Based on these observations, we conclude that there is a lot of growth in the area and that the vegetation will effectively retain a large amount of the soil, reducing the likelihood of erosion.” Consequently, mudflows and debris will decrease.

Public safety officials have stated that this upcoming storm is expected to arrive with much less intensity than the historic winter storms that devastated the Southland back in January.

A new report claimed that excessive rainfall from the historic winter storms was to blame for the destruction that occurred in July 2023 in Rolling Hills Estates, following a massive landslide that destroyed twelve homes and forced widespread evacuations.

Many people in Rolling Hills Estates are worried that this impending storm could inflict even more damage because they haven’t fully recovered from that landslide.

“Some of the landslides worry me,” a local named David Hannover stated. We’ve seen some pretty significant landslides recently, and I hope things don’t get any worse.

However, rain is a welcome sight in Southern California, so perhaps it’s a mixed blessing.

According to NWS, residents in flood-prone areas need to be ready for dangerous circumstances such as frequent flooding of main thoroughfares, residential streets, creeks, streams, general debris flows, and rockslides.

Damage-causing gusts of up to sixty miles per hour are predicted. In L.A. County, two to four inches of total precipitation are anticipated, while in the foothills and mountains, four to eight inches.

From Tuesday night at 10 p.m. until Friday morning at 4 a.m., a Flood Watch was issued for the counties of Los Angeles, Ventura, Santa Barbara, and San Luis Obispo. There will be sandbags at the neighborhood fire stations.

Snowfall is anticipated to be more  elevations between 7,500 and 9,000 feet, as reported by NWS.
