Ramaswamy:1A New FDA Not Allowed Approve an Abortion Pill by Supreme Court
Vivek Ramaswamy, a Republican running for president, stated that he thinks the Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) approval of the abortion pill mifepristone should be overturned by the Supreme Court.
At a CNN town hall in Iowa on Wednesday, Ramaswamy stated that the case, which the court had earlier decided to hear, concerns the power that regulatory agencies possess in the absence of explicit congressional authorization.
He maintained that when the FDA approved the pill in 2000, it went beyond its authority.
“In my view, the FDA went beyond its legal jurisdiction by utilizing an emergency approval to sanction an item that does not meet Congress’s definition of an emergency,” stated Ramaswamy.
The court decided to take taking up the case in response to demands from the Justice Department and Danco, the company that makes the branded form of mifepristone known as Mifeprex.
The drug’s availability may be restricted by the case.
Around half of all abortions performed nationwide are performed using the pill as part of a two-pill regimen, and the pill is frequently used for abortions during the first 10 weeks of pregnancy across the nation, according to the Guttmacher Institute.
The case started when a group of pro-life medical professionals, backed by the right-wing Christian advocacy organization.
Alliance Defending Freedom, claimed that the FDA had not followed the right procedures in approving the pill.
They claimed that the agency expeditiously approved it using a procedure that ought to be saved for extremely serious, life-threatening situations.

According to Ramaswamy, the stated that although mifepristone could remain available in states where abortion is legal, the FDA’s 2016 access-easing modifications should be reversed because they were improperly implemented.
The Supreme Court made the decision to hear arguments regarding the validity of those 2016 modifications.
The FDA’s approval of mifepristone as safe and effective is something the administration stands by, according to a statement from White House press secretary Karine Jean Pierre.
The Biden administration also issued a warning, stating that the FDA’s wider authority would be questioned if the original approval for mifepristone were to be revoked.
The Justice Department stated in a filing that “the agency has maintained that scientific judgment across five presidential administrations, while updating the drug’s approved conditions of use based on additional evidence and experience.”
