Senate : NO 1 Approves a Broad Bill on Defense Policy

Senate approves a broad bill on defense policy

The National Defense Authorization Act, a crucial piece of defense legislation that establishes annual funding authorization for the Department of Defense and sets policy priorities, was approved by the Senate on Wednesday.

$886 billion in national defense funding is authorized by the final negotiated version of the NDAA for the fiscal year 2024, an increase of $28 billion over the previous year.

With bipartisan support, it is anticipated to be approved by the Senate and sent to the House, where legislators are hoping it will pass both chambers by the end of the week. The bill was approved by the Senate by a vote of 87 to 13.

A 5.2% pay increase for military personnel is authorized by the comprehensive legislation, which also includes numerous other provisions pertaining to housing, childcare, and service member pay and benefits.

The bill includes a short-term extension of a contentious law that allows for the warrantless surveillance of foreign nationals, which infuriated some lawmakers.

Proponents contend that it is an essential instrument for protecting national security, but some lawmakers have criticized it for possible abuse.
