A strong storm that pounded parts of the East Coast over the weekend and extended into the Northeast on Monday resulted in at least four fatalities across four states, power outages, washed out roads, and forced the evacuation of one community.

Storm-related flooding in South Carolina claimed the life of a 72-year-old woman, as reported by the Charleston Post and Courier. The death was storm-related, according to the city coroner’s office, the paper said. On Sunday, there was over six inches of rain in the area.

According to the coroner’s office in Pennsylvania, a 73-year-old man passed away early on Monday after his car was also submerged in high water following significant rainfall in the County of Lancaster.

According to authorities, a 40-year-old man in Maine passed away on Monday after falling from his roof during a windstorm and being struck by another tree piece.

The district attorney for the area stated that “strong winds and rain caused a tree to collapse” on a small travel trailer in Plymouth County, Massachusetts, on Monday, killing an 89-year-old man. According to District Attorney Timothy Cruz, the man who had been trapped inside suffered serious head injuries and was brought to a hospital, where he later passed away.

Over the course of the day, the storm system dumped two to four inches of water over most of the Northeast due to strong winds and heavy rain.
The National Weather Service reported on Monday that there had been several reports of water rescues.

The effects of the storm linger even though the storm had moved into Canada by late Monday, its effects persisted and several communities, including parts of Maine, were still at risk of flooding.

A flash flood warning was in place there until early Tuesday.

Much of the Northeast will continue to experience breezy conditions on Tuesday. Most of the region will see an end to the rain on Monday night, but some flooding may take longer to go down and some rivers may still crest through Wednesday.

Furthermore, thousands of people were left without power on Monday night, even as some towns started the process of recuperating from the extreme weather.

At nine o’clock at night, over 660,000 patrons were without electricity throughout the Northeast, per poweroutage.us. Out of the more than 852,000 customers tracked, the majority of them were in Maine, where over 420,000 customers lacked electricity.

According to the Army Corps of Engineers, the gate prevents floodwaters from entering downtown Providence when it is closed.

Some areas of the interior Northeast will see some snowfall Monday night into early Tuesday. Little to no snowfall is predicted overall, with the possibility of a few inches in places vulnerable to the lake effect and in New York’s higher altitudes southeast is hit by destructive flooding

After moving through most of Florida on Saturday, the storm skirted the Southeast and mid-Atlantic coasts on Sunday, battering coastal communities with strong winds and occasionally record-breaking rainfall.

On Sunday, a flash flood emergency was declared in South Georgetown County, South Carolina’s eastern region, after almost a foot of rain fell there in a matter of hours.

According to the National Weather Service, the area had to undergo water rescues due to the floodwater surge.

Along with reports of possible tornado damage to nearby buildings and snapped power poles, trees have also fallen on houses, according to the local weather service.

In South Carolina, a number of daily rainfall records were achieved, including 3.86 inches in downtown Charleston, where the previous record of 1.18 inches was set in 1923.

Charleston experienced widespread flooding issues on Sunday as a result of a record amount of rain and strong winds that forced water onshore.

At one Charleston reporting station, high tide reached its highest point level from a nontropical system ever measured.

Florida also saw an increase in rainfall totals. Jacksonville received 5.70 inches of rain, while Gainesville recorded 7.29 inches.

The state was also pummeled by strong wind gusts that reached over 50 mph on Sunday. In West Palm Beach, wind gusts reached 61 mph.
