This weekend, a major storm is expected to intensify as it moves up the East Coast from Florida, bringing with it heavy rain, blustery winds, coastal flooding, and the potential to produce a few tornadoes.

This is what’s taking place at the moment: Although it hasn’t formed yet, this storm over the Gulf of Mexico will by early Saturday.

Monday: There will be heavy rain and wind throughout much of the Northeast. Over the Great Lakes, the Appalachians, and the interior Northeast, rain could turn to snow.

Possible Effects

Storm surge is a term usually reserved for hurricanes, but this storm will also pose a threat to coastal flooding, high surf, and beach erosion along Florida’s western coast late Saturday night and early Sunday, especially during high tide during those overnight hours.

The coastal Big Bend south to Tampa Bay, where the strongest winds overlap with an onshore component, is probably going to experience the worst flooding from this inundation.

In certain locations north and west of Tampa Bay, two to four feet of water are expected to accumulate.
