According to a lawsuit from the nonprofit healthcare organization, Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton (R) has made “sham requests” in an attempt to compel Seattle Children’s Hospital to divulge information about Texans who have received gender-affirming treatment.

Why this matters In its lawsuit, Seattle Children’s Hospital stated that although Paxton’s office had claimed to be looking into possible infractions of Texas’s ban on providing gender-affirming medical care to minors, the hospital was shielded from subpoenas from states that wished to “restrict or criminalize reproductive and gender-affirming care” by Washington’s recently enacted “Shield Law.”

The petition aims to stop the Demands states, “In addition, the Demands are an unconstitutional attempt to investigate and chill potential travel by Texas residents to obtain healthcare in another state ” patient data exchanged with the Texas Attorney General’s Office.

Specifics: According to court documents dated Dec. 7, which were first reported by Austin’s KXAN-TV this week, Paxton’s office announced on Nov. 17 that it was looking into the hospital for “misrepresentations” and possible violations of the Texas Deceptive Trade Practices Act.

It gave the hospital until Dec. 7 to respond.

The big picture: Paxton’s latest strong-arm tactics against transgender individuals are reflected in the demands made by the Texas Attorney General’s Office.

Advocates for transgender rights in Texas expressed concern last year when it became known that his office had asked the state’s Department of Public Safety for data on transgender Texans.
