In addition to making sure the reindeer are safely fastened for flight, Santa Claus has loaded his sleigh with toys for all the good kids. They are currently visiting millions of homes all over the world.

The North American Aerospace Defense Command has a tracking system that shows Santa’s progress around the globe while you wait for the sound of bells jingling in the air to indicate that he is almost here.

On Christmas Eve, at six a.m. ET, NORAD, which is in charge of guarding the skies over the United States and Canada, turns on its Santa tracking system.

On the NORAD website, people can track Santa’s global travels, or they can contact the command call 1-877-HI-NORAD (1-877-446-6723) as the center.

“On December 24th alone last year, NORAD answered over 73,000 calls,” Maj. Gen. Patrick Ryder, the press secretary for the Pentagon, stated this week.

According to a NORAD news release, users can also access the tracking service via the NORAD Tracks Santa app, social media, Amazon Alexa, OnStar, SiriusXM, and the Bing search engine.

For the past 68 years, NORAD has monitored Santa’s global travels during the holiday season. According to NORAD’s website, it all began by mistake in 1955 when a local newspaper ad told kids they could call Santa directly—the mistake was in the contact number.

“Instead of calling Santa, the child called the Continental Air Defense Command (CONAD) Operations Center in Colorado Springs, Colo.,” according to the website.

“Air Force Col. The commander on duty that evening, Harry Shoup, quickly realized that something had gone wrong and reassured the youngster that he was Santa.

More calls came in, so Shoup assigned a duty officer to take call duty. This started a tradition that persisted until NORAD was established in 1958.”

According to NORAD, this is how the tradition began and has continued for many years. The tracking service has been used by millions of families and kids worldwide to track Santa’s movements, according to NORAD.

As Lt. Gen. Blaise Frawley of NORAD explained to NBC’s Lester Holt, “many different fighter aircraft have intercepted Santa throughout the years.”

“We’ll normally give him a ‘wing wag’ as we peel off.”
