A man was accused of killing the president of a beloved Detroit synagogue by stabbing him. The two were strangers, according to the police.
Prosecutors said on Wednesday that a Detroit man has been charged with murder in the death of Detroit synagogue president Samantha Woll in October during a home invasion.
The Detroit Police Department has charged 28-year-old Michael Jackson-Bolani’s with felony murder during the commission or attempted commission of larceny and/or first-degree home invasion.
Prosecutors stated that the defendant could spend the rest of their life behind bars if found guilty.
According to police, he was also charged with one count of lying to a peace officer and one count of home invasion. CNN was unable to locate a lawyer for him right away.

“Permit me to express very plainly… At a press conference on Wednesday, Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy stated, “There are no facts to suggest that this was a hate crime and there are certainly no facts to suggest that this defendant knew Ms. Woll.”
She went on, “The evidence is just not there.”
In the wee hours of October 21, Woll, the board president of the Isaac Agree Downtown Synagogue, was discovered fatally stabbed outside her residence.
It is thought that following her attack, she staggered out.
According to authorities, Woll showed up normally for a wedding the night before.
After her death, police stated that she had returned home just after midnight and that there were no indications of forced entry.
The culprit appeared on Detroit Police Chief James E. White said on Wednesday that the object came into the authorities’ notice “a few weeks ago” and was being looked into for possible larcenies.
“We recognized him as someone about whose behavior we were interested in learning more in that specific area.
We were able to connect him to several larceny cases, and when we questioned him about those cases, we delved into other areas of the investigation and raised some red flags, the chief stated.
According to White, the suspect was later freed because there was insufficient evidence at the time to prosecute him for the murder.
“We were aware of his whereabouts and movements. Nobody in our community was ever in danger. We were aware of his workplace and his phone traffic,” stated White.
According to the chief, he was taken into custody “within an hour” of the authorities having sufficient information to make an arrest.

According to Worthy, a medical examiner concluded that Woll died as a result of multiple sharp force wounds from a straight-edge cutting instrument.
Prosecutors stated in a news release that Jackson-Bolanos entered Woll’s home, repeatedly stabbed her, and “lied to the police by making statements he knew were false and misleading relating to the investigation of the case.”
“This case is incredibly sad and tragic,” Worthy stated on Wednesday. Authorities have been working “around the clock” since the day of Woll’s death, according to the prosecutor.
“Every known lead, potential suspect, forensic report, and additional investigative instruments were used and deployed by the Detroit Department of Police.

Worthy went on, “The investigation phase of this case involved an amazing amount of work.”
In a statement from the Jewish Community Relations Council/AJC that CNN affiliate WXYZ obtained on Wednesday night, Woll’s family expressed gratitude to the Detroit police.
“The dedicated women and men of the DPD Homicide Task Force, who worked nonstop for weeks to conduct a thorough investigation into this tragic crime, have our deepest gratitude,” said the family.
We truly think they have solved this senseless crime because of their commitment and never-ending efforts. We are so grateful to them,” the statement said.
Samantha was a dedicated community activist, and her death was an unimaginable tragedy that touched not only her family and friends but also those who knew her.

Authorities said last month that a suspect in the killing had been detained, but that individual had since been freed. Worthy declared during the news conference on Wednesday that the individual was “not the suspect in this case.”
According to police, Jackson-Bolanos was remanded to jail after being charged.
Information about the court appearance could not be verified by CNN. The police said that his probable cause conference is set for December 27.
