Travelers on Christmas Day could face delays and hazardous driving conditions due to the widespread blizzard warnings that have been issued throughout the Central Plains.

On Monday afternoon, blizzard warnings were in effect for over 1.1 million people in portions of Nebraska, South Dakota, Kansas, Colorado, and Wyoming.

The National Weather Service stated early on Monday that a significant winter storm is expected to “let it snow, let it snow, let it snow” over parts of the Central Plains on Christmas, resulting in blizzard conditions and dangerous travel; dangerous ice accumulations are expected in the eastern Dakotas and northern Minnesota.

Through Tuesday, the storm is predicted to bring strong winds, freezing rain, and a lot of snow to much of the Central and Northern Plains, according to Robert Shackelford is a meteorologist for CNN.

According to him, there will probably be widespread travel disruptions throughout the area, and in some areas of the Central Plains, wind gusts as high as 75 mph could combine with a lot of snow to create dangerous whiteout conditions.

Through Tuesday, the Northern Plains are predicted to see significant snowfall, with an additional 8 to 12 inches likely to fall in some areas of western South Dakota.

According to Shackelford, there are ice storm warnings in place for the eastern portions of the Dakotas and far western Minnesota through Tuesday night.

Significant icing in these areas may result in power outages and tree damage. In Omaha, Nebraska, street maintenance personnel and snowplows hit the streets early in the holiday winter storm’s advance to get things ready.

Over much of the state, there was a blizzard warning on Monday afternoon, with the weather service predicting 5 to 11 inches of snow and ice accumulations in some areas of the state along with gusts of up to 40 mph.

“On Christmas morning, we will have a full staff of street maintenance workers available to plow and spread salt as needed, starting at 3:30 a.m. In a Facebook post, the city of Omaha stated that contractor resources were available.

At 6 a.m., a fleet of forty snowplows hit the streets, according to Todd Pfitzer, the engineer for Douglas County in Omaha, who spoke with CNN affiliate KETV. Pfitzer remarked, “You just have to be prepared.”

“Because it can truly be an issue if you’re not and it gets ahead of you.”

There were also blizzard warnings in effect on Monday afternoon.

for the majority of South Dakota. According to the weather service, there could be up to 11 inches of snow in some areas of the state, making travel extremely difficult or impossible.

Residents in areas under blizzard warnings were advised by the weather service to stay indoors and avoid traveling, but if they must, to pack survival kits and stay in their cars in case they get stuck.

“Driving conditions are rapidly getting worse across the state, especially in central and north central Nebraska, due to ongoing heavy snow accumulation and strong winds.”

Checking before departing is highly recommended, according to the Nebraska State Department of Transportation stated early on Monday.

According to the Nebraska State Patrol, travel is not advised.

In Nebraska, blizzard-related conditions led to icy roads and poor visibility, which caused cars to crash and some to slide off the road.

Tractor-trailers stuck on the road caused eastbound I-80 to close at York on Monday afternoon. The road has since reopened, according to the Nebraska State Patrol.

The South Dakota Highway Patrol was called to several accidents in Watertown because of icy roads, and they advised motorists that driving would become riskier throughout the day due to the combination of strong winds and ice-covered roads.

The storm is expected to gradually weaken as it moves through the Central Plains by Tuesday night. But according to CNN’s Shackelford, a wintry mix is probably going to linger into Wednesday in some areas of the Upper Midwest and northern Plains.

As the storm slowly approaches the Northeast on Wednesday, the Weather Prediction Center has issued a marginal risk for excessive rainfall for places like Philadelphia, New York, Washington, DC, and New York.
