Forecasters predicted that strong winds and subfreezing temperatures would result in icy roads and poor visibility through the early hours of Wednesday.

One person was killed in a traffic accident on Christmas as a result of hazardous road conditions brought on by heavy snow, freezing rain, and strong winds.

Nearly a million people in the Northern and Central Plains were under blizzard or ice storm warnings on Tuesday, and forecasters said the conditions could persist through early Wednesday.

More than 550,000 people in portions of five states—Colorado, Kansas, Nebraska, South Dakota, and Wyoming—were under a blizzard warning on Tuesday afternoon.

The warning would remain in effect until early Wednesday morning in some areas of the region, where there could be up to six inches of snowfall and 60 mph wind gusts, according to the National Weather Service.

When there is a lot of snow, winds exceeding 35 mph, and visibility of less than a quarter mile for a minimum of three hours, a storm is classified as a blizzard.

Notes: There are three tiers of risk indicated on this map: Some, there’s a chance of experiencing severe weather in the area; High, extreme, and dangerous weather is anticipated in the area; moderate weather is likely to bring damage to the area.

On Monday night in Kansas, an 86-year-old woman lost her life when a man operating a the Kansas Highway Patrol reports that a pick-up truck on state highway 156 lost control on the icy, snowy road and slid into oncoming traffic.

The driver of the SUV that the truck hit was a woman named Evelyn D. Reece of Wichita, Kansas, according to the authorities. At the scene, she was pronounced dead. Due to injuries, three people were admitted to the hospital.

An ice storm warning was in effect for almost 400,000 people in the Dakotas and a portion of western Minnesota on Tuesday afternoon.

The Weather Service predicted that a dangerous combination of sleet and freezing rain would cover the Dakotas and northern Minnesota on Tuesday, resulting in ice accumulation totals exceeding half an inch and dangerous travel conditions.

When the tempest travels across the Plains, a wintry mix is probably going to follow on Wednesday into parts of the Mississippi Valley.

As of Tuesday morning, some areas of Nebraska and South Dakota had received roughly four inches of snow; however, severe winds hindered the ability to obtain precise measurements, according to Amanda Viken, a meteorologist at the National Weather Service’s North Platte, Nebraska, office.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration reported that since Monday, up to one foot of snow had fallen in certain towns in southeast South Dakota.

Up to four more inches of snow are predicted in western South Dakota, western Nebraska, far eastern Wyoming, and northeastern Colorado before the storm taper off on Tuesday night into Wednesday, according to the National Weather Service.

Where snowfall has decreased or halted, freezing forecasters warned that throughout the day, icy roads and whiteout conditions could be caused by high temperatures and wind gusts exceeding 55 mph.
