Travel is hampered by a blizzard in the Plains, but Christmas is snowless in most of the US

Travel through Tuesday was threatened by a “significant” winter storm that affected much of the north-central United States, while much of the nation saw “unusually mild” temperatures with no white Christmas.

The big picture: The National Weather Service said that new high temperature records for Christmas may have been set in Minnesota and Wisconsin based on preliminary data.

The NWS issued a warning that a strengthening low-pressure system would affect parts of the Plains and Upper Midwest with blizzard conditions, heavy snow, freezing rain, and strong winds through Tuesday night, even though much of the country had a snowless Christmas Day.

Situation: Over the weekend, dense fog affected holiday travel in Illinois, forcing before things started to clear up on Sunday, airlines had to cancel hundreds of flights at Chicago’s Midway International Airport on Christmas Eve.

The NWS reported that the city, along with Minneapolis and Kansas City, had a wet Christmas.

In a Monday evening forecast discussion, the NWS stated that a combination of strong winds reaching up to 55 mph and heavy snowfall “will produce blizzard conditions for central South Dakota into much of Nebraska resulting in difficult to near impossible travel.”

In certain places, up to six inches of snow were predicted, and blizzard warnings for Nebraska and South Dakota remained in force until Tuesday.

On Christmas morning, the Nebraska State Patrol responded to vehicles sliding in the snow on Interstate 80.

Apart from that, following a more exceptionally mild temperatures were predicted for Christmas Day in the Upper Midwest and Great Lakes, “where high temps could range between 15-25 degrees above normal,” the NWS said on Monday morning, following a weekend that “sported numerous record warm min and max temps in the Upper Midwest.”

By the numbers: As of 10 a.m. on Monday, at least eight sites—Antigo, Green Bay, Marshfield, Merrill, Rhinelander, Stevens Point, Wausau, and Wisconsin Rapids—had unofficially set or tied record high temperatures for Christmas Day, according to a post from the NWS’s Green Bay office to X.

Preliminary NWS data indicates that Rochester, Minnesota, recorded a record high temperature of 53°F on December 25.

What’s next: Tuesday night’s storm was predicted to gradually weaken, though a “wintry mix” was probably to continue into Wednesday in some areas of the Upper Midwest and Northern Plains.

During a Monday night forecast discussion, the NWS stated, “Temperatures are expected to remain anomalously warm east of the Mississippi through midweek.”

Zoom out: Canada, on the other hand, has also been having an unusually warm winter.

Officials in Alberta reported that at least ten new high temperature records were set on Friday, with Taber recording 14.9°C (59°F). Toronto experienced a record high of 13.2°C (56°F) one week prior.

According to CBC, the town of Radisson in the western Canadian province of Saskatchewan was having trouble keeping its natural ice rink frozen because of the warm winter.

In between the words: Canada’s Environment and Climate Change and other organizations say the uncharacteristically warm temperatures can be attributed to both El Niño and climate change caused by humans.

In comparison to the preindustrial era, record warmth is at least twice as likely now, according to Climate Central’s Climate Shift Index.
