Trump is heard threatening Michigan canvassers to revoke their certification of the 2020 election.

According to the Detroit News on Thursday, which cited audio recordings, the former president of the United States exerted pressure on two members of the Wayne County Board of Canvassers in Michigan to not certify the 2020 presidential elections.

Why this matters The recordings were made public at a time when the front-runner in the Republican primary for 2024, Ted Cruz, is being charged with four felonies, including conspiracy for allegedly trying to hold onto power after losing the 2020 election.

The Jan. 6 indictment is largely a result of Trump’s fabricated allegations of voter fraud in Detroit and his allies’ attempts to void Michigan’s election results in 2020.

Motivating the news: On November 17, 2020, Trump informed GOP Wayne County canvassers over the phone  according to The Detroit News, Monica Palmer and William Hartmann said they would look “terrible” if they signed papers certifying the election after first voting against it.

It is purported that Wayne County resident and chair of the Republican National Committee, Ronna McDaniel, instructed the canvassers not to certify votes.

According to the outlet, the two canvassers left the meeting without certifying but later stated they would if an audit was conducted in specific counties.

The recording purportedly captured Trump saying, “We have to fight for our country.” “We can’t let these people take our country away from us.”

Notably, Palmer admitted to the Detroit News on multiple occasions that she couldn’t recall what was said during the call.

What they’re expressing: An email from a Trump spokesperson stated: “All of President Trump’s actions were taken in furtherance of his duty as President of the United States to faithfully take care of the laws and ensure election integrity, including investigating the rigged and stolen 2020 Presidential Election.”

A spokesman charged that Democrats, including President Biden, were “desperately leaking misleading information to interfere in the election.”

McDaniel stated to the Detroit News: “What I said publicly and repeatedly at the time, as referenced in my letter on Nov. 21, 2020, is that there was ample evidence that warranted an audit.”

An Axios request for comment was not immediately answered by RNC representatives.
