A U.S. official stated that a land-based cruise missile fired from Houthi-controlled Yemen struck a merchant vessel operating in the southern Red Sea.

No casualties were reported, but the merchant ship had “damage causing a fire on-board,” according to a post made on X by the U.S. Central Command on Monday night.

This is the latest attack by Iranian-backed Houthi militants in Yemen, who have been supporting Hamas in the conflict with Israel by launching missiles and drones against ships cruising the area.

Midway through November, the Bahamian-flagged Galaxy Leader was taken over by Houthi commandos in the Red Sea, who claimed it was associated with Israel. The vessel and its international crew were taken to the port of Hodeida in Yemen following the seizure, and they are still there.

The merchant ship Motor Transport STRINDA was struck by a land-based cruise missile launched from Houthi-controlled Yemen, according to a U.S. official who spoke with ABC News on Monday. The merchant ship was approximately 60 nautical miles north of the Bab-al-Mandab, the narrow strait separating Yemen from the northeast coast of Africa.

A report of an attack on a commercial vessel operating 15 nautical miles west of the port of Mocha, Yemen, was received by the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations earlier on Monday.

The attack resulted in some damage and a fire, but the U.S. official said that no casualties were reported.

There were no US Navy ships in the vicinity at the time of the attack.
However, the destroyer USS Mason has arrived on the scene to offer support.

The USS Mason and USS Carney, a destroyer, have been involved in multiple incidents in recent weeks where they have shot down drones or Houthi missiles intended to target Israel or commercial ships.

To safeguard commercial ships cruising in the area, the United States is in talks to establish a multinational task force with other nations.

Additionally, public statements from American officials have stated that the country retains the right to react to the Houthi attacks whenever and wherever it pleases.
