Pennsylvania University The board of Penn’s Wharton business school has asked President Liz Magill to step down, according to a letter that Axioms was able to obtain.

Why this matters Due to Magill’s and a few other Ivy League leaders’ widely criticized testimony at a congressional hearing on antisemitism earlier this week, pressure is growing on them.

Magill’s appearance in D.C. was cited by Axioms earlier today as a major factor in the wealthy donor’s decision to withhold a $100 million gift from the school.

What they’re expressing: In a letter to Magill, the Wharton board of advisors stated that, since its regularly scheduled meeting on Nov. 16, it has convened “an unprecedented” eight meetings, the majority of which have been centered around student safety and other community issues.
concerning “hate-based behavior” and antisemitism on the Penn campus.

“The dangerous and toxic culture on our campus, which has been allowed by university leadership and is led by a select group of students and faculty, has deeply concerned [the Board] and continues to do so.

Our board kindly suggests to you and the Board of Trustees that the University needs new leadership with immediate effect due to the stated beliefs of the University leadership and their collective inaction.”

The student newspaper at Penn broke the initial news about the letter.

Behind the scenes: According to a person with knowledge of the matter, neither Magill nor Board of Trustees Chair Scott Bok showed up for the meeting on November 16 as is customary.

That initial meeting, which was was supposed to center on artificial intelligence, but instead it was dominated by a dean’s speech about how Wharton is being harmed by the university’s response to the Israel-Hamas war.

A number of unanimous resolutions that were included in the letter to Magill were passed at the end of the meeting.

The main goal of those resolutions was to amend Penn’s code of conduct to prohibit instructors, staff, and students from “celebrating or advocating for the murder, killing, genocide, or annihilation of any individual classmate or any group of individuals in our community,” among other things.

Magill met with Wharton’s board approximately a week ago, but he refused to implement the suggested changes. After her testimony before Congress, the board decided to request her resignation.
